cygnia: Good god in hell...
Supreme Court Nominee Kagan declines to take sides on 'Twilight' debateWASHINGTON -- Team Edward or Team Jacob? That's one debate Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan steered clear of.
At her Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday, Kagan was asked by Sen. Amy Klobuchar about "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" movie, which opened this week. The franchise has a huge following among teenage girls and has sparked debate over whether the tormented heroine Bella should choose Edward the vampire or Jacob the werewolf.
The senator jokingly asked Kagan's thoughts on "the vampire versus the werewolf."
Kagan, who has declined to say how she might rule on issues that could come before the court, dodged this one - presumably on other grounds. She said she hadn't seen the film, and wished the senator wouldn't pose the question.
Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said she realized Kagan "can't comment on future cases. So I'll leave that alone."

This is...I mean....
*shakes head in disbelief*
Is THIS really what our elected officials DO during important meetings?!?!?!

To be fair, this is exactly the sort of thing I'd pull, if elected.
Which is why I will never run for office.

Oh I think the staff of that show have been loving these hearings... so much good materials.
If they tape this week that is... They don't always when it is a holiday weekend.

That icon of Auusie birds is full of so much win I wept with pride. Is it gankable? I always give full keyword credit!

I'm pretty sure it's gankable, I've had it for a few years so I don't recall clearly. Credit to teechers_pet
at ElJay, they made it for the community parrot_lovers

"I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is called a disgrace; that two are called a law firm, and that three or more become a Congress! And by God, I have had this Congress!"
(Why don't I have any 1776
/John adams icons?!)

LOVE. SO MUCH.
I discovered the wonderfulness that is 1776 a year ago. It's definitely one of my favorite musicals ever.

In't it? I love singing the songs anywhere, anytime. 8D

I just discovered that musical, like, last week and SO MUCH LOVE! With the snark and the randomly veering off into EXTREME SUBTEXT and LOFF! If you make/find any icons, point me to them? :D

I have admit I am really impressed with how Kagan has responded to some of the questions asked. If nothing else this is good practice/training when she is hearing cases.
Fri, Jul. 2nd, 2010 12:32 am (UTC)
My favorite was the idiot who asked her (in JUNE mind you) what she had done for Christmas.
Her reply? "Like most Jews I was probably at a Chinese restraunt."
I think she's going to be a real hoot on the Court.
Thu, Jul. 1st, 2010 12:06 am (UTC)
Can someone please explain to me why this was even asked?
Thu, Jul. 1st, 2010 12:21 am (UTC)
Because she's a woman. Can't have the ladies being taken seriously in politics now, can we? What really makes me headdesk is that it appears to have been another woman who asked the question. Do we really need to tear eachother down? Doesn't the patriarchy do a good job of that all on its own?

Klobuchar's a Democrat, and she supports Kagan's nomination
. If you watch it
, she was joking about how she has a teenager who went to the midnight showing last night. Kagan's been showing a sense of humor during the confirmation hearings so far, so Klobuchar thought it was probably safe to start off with a joke.

Do you think she would have asked a man from her own party a question like that?
Thu, Jul. 1st, 2010 02:26 am (UTC)
Hit post too soon.
And, if a man WAS asked a comparable question (like about which sports team he supported, b/c all men like sports, hurr hurr) do you think it would be reported to this extent? Or with the subtle overtones of "Those shallow, silly men"?
Thu, Jul. 1st, 2010 02:44 am (UTC)
Well, Klobuchar's apparently not too afraid of asking women about sports
I'm not saying either of those (but particularly the Twilight question) were exactly the smartest thing to ask, but it's not like starting off with a jokey question is terribly unusual. Keep in mind roughly half the people at a nomination hearing are there basically for emotional support and timefilling.

I guess my reaction is because of how I'm hearing it framed (by my extremely douchetastic, conservative step father and his douchetastic friends), which is "Stupid wimminz! Desecrating our political halls with their stupid shallowness!"
Thu, Jul. 1st, 2010 03:12 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'd be pretty annoyed about that too.

It used to be johnsons! Johnsons as far as the eye could see!

Also there was an Elena Kegan/Twilight joke on Wait Wait last Saturday. Its possible that played a role, especially if Kegan had earlier indicated that she was a NPR listener.

During the Sotomayor confirmation hearings, Franken quizzed her
about being a Perry Mason fan. (I'm sure other senators ask inane things, too, but I pay more attention to what my representatives do.)

Team Edward or Team Jacob? = the new Boxers or Briefs?

THIS IS WHY CONGRESS CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.
