Over on the FAP slash forums, Bottlebrush is doing his/her earnest best to seem tolerant, open minded and a firm promoter of sexual orientation equality: by saying that now Remus is straight, he is 'creepy' and 'revolting'.

Most of the people, including other slashers like Lupins Little Sister (who is captain terrific), call him/her on their shit:

Bottlebrush, if you switched the words 'gay' and 'straight' around up there it would read like something incredibly hateful and people would be over it like a tonne of bricks. I will now do it for you, to give you the general idea.

I did really like the canon Lupin that we saw in PoA and OotP. And part of his personality, for me, was that he was straight. That has now been trashed, and what’s left is a person I just don’t like at all. Gay Lupin revolts me, because it’s simply not right.

I swear, I don't see him as gay but if someone said something with that precise wording I'd probably slug them in the temple.

And from Perceval:

How does Remus having a different sexual orientation than you assumed he did make him, in your words, "someone nasty and creepy"? You keep saying you don't define and judge people by their sexual orientations, but how can that be taken any other way?

When faced with their own bullshit, Bottlebrush responds as such:

There Goes My Gun, you make a good point, and it would be shameful and insupportable of me to say of a real-life person what I said about Lupin. I stick by my real-life friends whatever, like when a lesbian friend told me she had gone bisexual and was living with her boyfriend. It made no difference to our friendship. But - well, I suppose this is illogical, but it does make a difference to what I feel about this fictional character. It means that the character as I knew and liked him has become someone else, someone nasty and creepy. Sorry, but all I've got to go on is what I read in the book, and what I read I don't like.

Fucking hypocrisy is all it is. 'Oh, I'm so wooooonderful and tolerant and magical and I have a fucking glittery wand of enlightenment shoved up my ass, but I think a character is nauseating because I wanted them to be gay and they're nooooot'.

I HATE THAT.

I do not know HOW many times I've heard people say how open-minded they are, BUT ARE PREJUDICED AGAINST THE PEOPLE THEY CLAIM ARE OPPRESSING THEM!!!!

We're becoming so "tolerant" that a white male is now the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting a scholarship--or even getting INTO college. I HATE IT. I can tell you now, I hate the favoritism I get because I'm a female with a Cherokee card. Because I can check that little box that says "Native American" and the other one that says "Female," I feel horrible because I'm instantly vaulted ahead of everyone else because, if I wasn't, that'd be bigotry.

HYP. POC. CRA. SEE.

It's just meanness, really. To quote something else I said in that post:

...here I was, thinking the general idea of GLBT rights was that people would be looked at and respected by society regardless of their sexuality: that somehow, someone's orientation wouldn't make a dint on whether someone perceived them to be a decent person and worthy of love. Of course, as a society we need to be aware that the GLBT community is going to need special laws to ensure that they aren't hurt by the bigoted and violent, but the same implicit standing goes that you have to respect people and view them equally, no matter what their orientation. Even if they're straight.

Bigotry against heterosexuals is terrible. Even if I don't care what your sexual preference is so long as you don't try to force me to accept it, because I'm heterosexual I'm evil. 'Specially helps if yer one of those intolerant Catholics, eh?

I've never wanted to reach out and shake someone in my life like I wanted to do to Bottlebrush. At least rfg has a little sense of humor about herself, Bottlebrush is so serious and humorless. The way she turned on Lupin for not being teh GaY is so ... weird and hypocritical.

I really want to shake her, too. She's not making any freakin' sense! Plus, her comments are very weird on the CS R/T thread ... if R/T was written more convincingly, it'd be worse, apparently.

OK, so let me get this right.

Real person: bisexual = ok
Factional character: bisexual = not ok

WTF?

She(or he?) is not being open-minded, s/he is being selective-open-minded (if it doesn't exist, it exists now). S/he selects what she wants to be open-minded about...which kinda doesn't work.

Those people are like the fangirls(or boys) going "Yaoi is sooo hot!!!!! But Yuri is gross and wrong!!!!"

They don't make senses!

That is so mindnumbingly stupid I don't even know where to start. Remus being straight makes him creepy? WTF? This person has serious problems. I am so disgusted.

I know, I've seen her ranting about this before. She's so inflamatory. I love the way she tries to excuse it by saying she accepts her bisexual friends in RL, except that this only serves to make her more hypocritical and ignorant. Bah!

I don't get that attitude. What the hell is wrong with liking het? Or for goodness sakes, why not just pretend he's both? Did they *really* think JKR was going to do something as risque as a homosexual relationship? Even the most daring authors of our time won't touch that.

It's like when yaoi fans attack people who just don't have a taste for the fiction or just don't agree with homosexuality in general. Just because somebody doesn't like something or thinks it's right doesn't always mean they're hateful and prejudiced. It simply means they have a different life perspective than you do.

At the risk of sounding childish - 'Wanna bet?'

::hasn't read more than one recent novel(la) with homosexual relationships and isn't planning to write more than one::

Don't mean to be confrontational or anything. Just sayin'.

Of course, now I really need to get off my butt and finish and publish

Why oh why must Bottlebrush persist in making us all look like crazy people? I promise, not all canon shippers are that bad. I used to be one, before HBP, but I had very little problem switching to fanon.

I dunno. Pre-HBP, Bottlebrush was always calling people for saying sexuality affects someone's personality. Remus used to be her favourite character, so what exactly has changed about him? And why does shipping have to be a great big moral campaign? Why can't some people just stick to thinking, "These two would be good together"?

I just adore LupinsLittleSister for proving that not all of us are batshit crazy.

I can imagine how annoyingly righteous and strident she would be if someone said the opposite of what she's saying, if gay Lupin was repulsive and not right. I'm glad the Bottlebrushes of the Wolfstar world are a minority -- vocal, delusional, nutty, hypocritical minority.

So, your queer character of choice is with a girl? Don't worry, it's called:

IT!

Y!

God forbid, eh?

That would seem like a nice, sensible workaround, but in Bottlebrush's particular brand of Philosophical Wolfstarism, bisexuality is flat out. See, if Remus loved Sirius, he is not allowed to love anybody else ever again for the rest of his life. I quote:

But the Sirius/Remus relationship that I saw was something uniquely strong and intense, something enduring eternally and irreplaceable. Something that made its mark on both of them for the whole of their lives, and yes I do mean the Azkaban years as well. Something that would make it impossible for Remus ever to contemplate an intimate relationship with anyone else. And yes, it didn’t happen, you don’t have to tell me, JKR already told me. But I’ll hang on to my vision of that passionate, exclusive, death-defying love and take it into AU. Canon can go hang.

Another poster asks: So what do you want him to do, wallow in pain and suffering for the next twenty years? Would that be deep enough for you?

Bottlebrush replies: My first thought was to say defiantly “Yes, exactly.” But that wouldn’t be precisely what I meant. My Remus wouldn’t have wallowed in anything. He would have committed himself wholeheartedly to the war against evil, and when – if – that war was won, he would have found useful work to do. He would have loved people – Harry and the other kids, and the surviving members of the Order – platonically. He would have done good in the world, and been content, and waited patiently for his release and reunion with his beloved (because wizards, unlike us Muggles, have reason to believe death is not the end). It is possible to be a worthwhile human being without necessarily shagging anyone, and that’s how I saw Remus to be. I admit I was wrong in canon, but I contend my vision is not an impossible nor an unworthy one.

I was proud, too. About 87% of the ship seemed to be taking the news like normal people, but I guess there are always some shippers who won't accept canon because they are delusional.

What irks me is that people truly believe that slash would be in the books and then get annoyed when it's not... Don't get me wrong, I like slash, but I've never believed it would crop up in the books.

Maybe I'm just speaking of the part of England I live in, but with the amount of homophobes here? No chance.

Also, that's like going (using a HP non-shipping example), "oh my God, Blaise is black, he's ruined now! GOD JKR, HOW COULD YOU?! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! And I'm not racist, because my best mate's black."
