The HMS STFU - Is JKR a Snape/Hermione shipper in the closet?
|
| Is that flask in DH going to take on the same mythological significance as the stupid feeding Harry with toast thing did for the delusional variants of Harry/Hermione shippers?
I thought this was a real classy statement, too:
I gave up on finding my copy of Half-Blood Prince in the garage and got a copy out of the library. British edition -- wow, their cover art is yucky.
Ahem, I'll have you know that the UK versions are perfectly acceptable and have fine cover art, thankyouverymuch.
We see another of her failures in Borgin and Burkes, when she shows that she is the world's most hopeless spy. She checks her hair before going in and asking after Malfoy. It's so pathetic it's cute. Ron criticizes her and she snaps, "Well, next time you can show me how it's done, Master of Mystery!" I suppose JKR wants us to see this as lovebirds bickering, but all I can think is yeah, that is a better name for the expert double agent than "Half-Blood Prince." It's not the only time the book invites comparison between Ron and Snape.
You know, I think that's a very fine example of trying to read between the lines a little too closely and a little too assiduously. Sometimes there's nothing to read but good ol' white paper.

...it's not?
This whole theory of theirs is just weird enough to be interesting. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |
| That flask, I thought, just as Ariadne gave the flask as an example, the one Hermione conjures out of thin air to receive Snape's memories while Harry is completely at a loss. I remember at the time of first reading thinking, "When did she learn how to do THAT?" It was the most bad-ass thing I'd seen her do. Ariadne said, "There had to have been...a look...that passed between Snape and Hermione...."
Yeah, 'cause Hermione had never done any impressive magic before that. It must have been Snape-inspired. And that was the most bad-ass thing she'd ever done? Conjuring a flask?
Do shippers ever pay any attention to any parts of the books that do not involve their OTP? | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| And now, Anonymous Theater presents "Simple Answers to Stupid Questions"
Question: Is JKR a closeted Snape/Hermione shipper?
Answer: No.

| Is it possible that sshg folks, very generally speaking, might be close readers, more so than fans of other ships?
Oh my giddy aunt, I hate this sentence. I hate it every time it gets used, and almost every time it's been used, it's been by HP shippers.
Breaking news: you're not a ____shipper 'cause you know how to read better than other people.
Forgive me if these thoughts are old hat; I'm pretty new to this HP fandom thing.
That much is obvious. | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |
| | There's getting the hints that the author put in there for you to find (see, for example, names HP). Then there's the things that only you see because you're wearing your special decoder-glasses, which enable you to see things your brain wants to see. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| There is more:
I attended both SS/HG roundtables at Terminus, at least until baby Lila got fed up with sitting still during the second one and asked me to take her outside. I left just as Machshefa was asking attendees, "Why Hermione?" Why pair Snape with Hermione rather than anyone else or an original character? My first answers were to make it up to Hermione that JKR had her settling for Ron, and because Snape has to be paired with someone he would think was good enough.
But after I left, I continued thinking and concluded: it's because Hermione is a radical, a student radical. She wants things the way they ought to be, and is inexperienced and dogmatic about it. She offends and threatens the house elves with S.P.E.W., but her campaign turns out (yay JKR) to work in the end, even though the more experienced though sympathetic Hagrid tells her to let them be and the more diplomatic Dumbledore has no thoughts of changing their status quo, only of improving their lot within his domain. (In the opposite direction, Hermione also keeps Rita Skeeter the way she ought to be.)
This combination of rightness and inexperienced lack of respect for others' objections is just right for someone who must work through Snape's defenses and turn him into someone who can have a love life. Someone who is more respectful might take Snape at his word when he says he'd be happier not going through everything it would take to re-admit love into his world, and of course most people are not as smart and gutsy as Hermione and might well be scared off by Snape's inevitable lashings-out or convinced by whatever irrefutable logic he'd use to keep up his defenses. But to all of these things, I can easily picture Hermione saying to herself, "But I'm right. I know I'm right." And it might be nice for Snape to be with someone who is right about him, for a change. Does anyone understand how a genius like Hermione can be compatible with a C student like Ron? Where do we see Hermione enjoying a companion in her giftedness? Is Rowling saying that a genius can survive, can feed and honor her gifts, without a peer? Are we to imagine that Hermione is satisfied to have love without this?
The series is full of examples of reasonably talented folks doing extraordinary things because they work together. The Marauder’s Map is a masterpiece of a group project; the Marauders would never have become Animagi if James and Sirius hadn’t wanted to keep Lupin company, and Peter hadn’t wanted to stay included; Fred and George spark off each other’s ideas constantly; through Dumbledore’s Army, Harry trains many students to master Patronuses; Hogwarts itself is a group project. Discuss. (http://drinkingcocoa.livejournal.com/6610.html)
Some of the bad writing stays bad on re-reading. The Hermione and Ron kiss, groan, must be the least sexy resolution of sexual tension I've ever read. The yuck factors just pile up: the setting, the circumstances, the trigger, the lack of privacy, even and especially the suggestion that they're actually aroused and going for it. OMG, hand me the puke bucket. I've been trying to be open to Ron and Hermione as a pairing, honest, at least in canon. But really, JKR, is this helpful? I know you like to leaven and sometimes intensify the action with moments of humor, but no pairing deserves their first kiss to be so revolting. | "Making it up to Hermione". Because she "deserves" better, right? Good Lord, the Ron-hate...
And Hermione being a radical about the house-elves is not painted as necessarily being a good thing. Her goal is good, but she's going about it entirely the wrong way. Ron being with her calms her down a bit.
And more Hermione-worship, while they try to say it's not because they think THEY could bring Snape out of his shell.
And do these people realize that Hermione CHOSE Ron? Just because he's intelligent in a different way--yes, Virginia, there are different kinds of intelligence--doesn't mean he's "not good enough" for her. JKR was writing in English, right? She wasn't saying "smart girls should settle", she was saying that Hermione needed Ron's humor and Ron needed Hermione's intellect. And both of them have passion to spare. Romantic matches aren't always everything-in-common; like the song says, opposites attract.
And besides, if Hermione wants to be among peers, she's working at the Ministry... no, wait, let's not go there. And why is Ron dismissed as stupid just because he didn't get fifteen OWLs or whatever?
And then they talk about the Marauders sparking each other's creativity. So it is with Ron and Hermione. So says Proverbs: "As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another." That's the relationship in a nutshell.
And that last one really bugs me. That's clearly a shipper showing disgust that her ship didn't sail. And not even trying to be subtle about it. I honestly chuckled at the Ron/Hermione kiss--I'm unable to see why the poster was so disgusted... oh, right, she thinks she Hermione is too good for Ron. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

OMG, NO PRIVACY!? 'Cause Harry and Ginny didn't kiss in a room full of people (including her family members)! Because people never express exuberance after a near-death experience! Because teenagers never get horny!

Did these people learn nothing from the Dumbledore backstory? HE fell in love with someone as brilliant and talented as he was, and look how that turned out! Intelligence isn't everything. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

OK, pet peeve: Hermione is a good student. She is studious and hard working. This does not necessarily equal "genius". She is no doubt gifted and very smart, but I think "genius" is stretching it a bit. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| it's because Hermione is a radical, a student radical.
I'm sorry, I think I just lost a bunch of brain cells here. Hermione is an activist; an activist and a radical are two different animals - though they're known to fraternize to an insane degree. Hermione is so very establismentarian it's scary. In the first book she fears expulsion more than death. In the third book, her biggest fear was a failing grade. In later books, she's still stunning the boys when she decides to not finish a homework assignment OMGrightNOW. Even when she starts the DA, she went through the school regulations and the Educational Decrees first! It's not until Deathly Hallows that she does something illegal, and y'know that 'all's fair in love and war' sort of applies. A couple of bad curses versus homicidal predjudiced madman in power? Yeah, she can feel guilty about the Unforgivables later.
She is such a product of the establishment, in fact, that I can see only two things saving her from going down the same road Percy Weasley did: she is friends with Harry and was thus involved in most of his unfortunate adventures, so she knows who is telling the truth and who isn't. And she's a young Muggle-born. She cannot possibly fear Voldemort the way witches and wizards who grew up in that culture of terror and suspiscion because her worst fears about him are going to fall short of what he is actually capable of doing. She didn't have the absolute need to stick her head in the sand the way Percy did.
There's a good qoute on the matter: "Radicalism is characterized less by its principles than by the manner of their application". Just because she campaigns for reform does not mean she's a radical.
My teal dear, let me show you it. I'm thinking of calling it Bambi. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | She's NOT a genius, you pathetic SS/HG Suemione fanits, she's the school swot. Very good with stuff you can read in books, but without the flair that genius has. She is less successful with the sort of intuitive stuff that Harry gets in every book. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| | A SS/HG roundtable?? What is with them, do they think that if they use academic conference terms it legitimizes their argument? Sometimes I think that, with the way they write essays like they're freaking dissertations. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

Okay guys, I want a list.
