Subject:JKR owes us Revised Editions of HP!
Time:11:57 am
A "slightly disgruntled fan" wrote an 80,000-word essay about everything he disliked in the books and wants JKR to rewrite HP in accordance with his wishes.

Holy smeg. This bloke reminds me of keiran halcyon. "Harry wasn't enough of a tough guy, he never really did anything, he should have manned up and started being an 11-year-old superpowered whiz-kid." I hate this argument - it totally undermines the fact that all Voldemort's hard work, hate, cunning, planning and paranoia are undone by someone whose real power is in the LOVE and LOYALTY he feels for others and inspires in others, rather than a rule by fear. It ruins the whole "It is our choices that makes us what we are" argument by trying to claim that something OTHER than Harry's love for his friends could have deflected the curse in the Forbidden Forest scene in DH, just as Lily's love held such a strong shield over him year after year.

STRENGTH IS NOT MEASURED BY HOW MUCH YOU CAN LIFT, HOW MUCH MARTIAL ARTS YOU KNOW OR HOW MUCH MAGICAL POWER YOU CAN WIELD. STRENGTH IS WHETHER YOU CAN CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT OVER WHAT IS EASY WHEN IT COUNTS. STRENGTH IS THE ABILITY TO LOVE, KNOWING IT MAKES YOU VULNERABLE.

Ahem. Sorry. I will not splooge again.

...80,000 words?

Why the hell didn't he just start rewriting it himself?

I'd be really happy if she went back and revised the odd little detail, but revising the entire point of the book?

I think not.

Note to Teachers:

I skimmed a few sections and my favorite part is when he refers to Harry as a mentally handicapped child. Also, the book is about the Trio (SHOCK! GASP!), Harry shouldn't worry so damn much about other people dying and who cares about Molly Weasley.

I just don't get this fandom. If people did not like the books, or were disappointed in the end, or their ship didn't sail, or their woobie is ded from snake, or whatever...why don't they just wander away and find something else to do? Why wank about it for two years? I have left fandoms when I no longer liked the product so I know that it can be done. This is some special kind of insanity that should be listed in the next DSM.

Why spend time and energy writing an 80,000 word essay on why you don't like something? I don't even think my damn dissertation was 80,000 words.

Dear Lord.

It's like the ultimate in entitlement complexes.

Also, I bet this guy totally missed the point of Luke throwing away his lightsaber in RotJ, too. In fact, he's doing the very same mistake all the cliche villains fall into: It's not the power and badassery that make Luke and Harry heroes, it's about why they do it.

Reading some of his comments on TLC...what a pompous ass. He didn't like it, so it needs to be changed. All in the name of saving his "to be read again and again" bookshelf. Merlin's pants, what a dick.

I'm not even touching the essay, but I read his little blurb and:

The critique makes claims such as that Harry fails to fulfill his role as a protagonist and, ultimately, ceases to be even a necessary character. Hermione could easily have made it through Book 7 without Harry and Ron tagging along after her.... That seems like a fairly major problem, when the title character turns out to be unnecessary.

She could, could she? Yeah, Hermione's repeated dues ex machina is a bit obvious (I just summoned it out the window from Dumbledore's office!), but last time I checked, the trio's efforts were collaborative. It's one of the things JKR does best; she shows her readers that all three of them would be dead had it not been for one of the others. They needed each other.

Hermione would never have had the stones to do some of things Harry did (such as cast an Unforgivable Curse). Not to mention that whole "sharing a soul with the villain thing that ultimately led to his demise" wouldn't have done much for her as it would for Harry.

You know, the time these people put into ranting about this series, you'd think they'd write their own stories. Why are people SO butthurt that this series didn't turn out how they wanted?

I do have an M.A. in English, but I feel my main qualifications for writing the book are that I'm a (slightly disgruntled) fan of the series, and I've put a lot of effort into analyzing the seven books.

So why don't you just write your own damn series then?

And, if the latter were an actual qualification, pretty much every member of HP fandom would be a literary scholar.

Sorry to post twice in a row, but this person is pissing me off.

In fact, in the last fight, any one of us could have taken Harry's place. You don't need to know magic, just be able to wave a stick around and shout "Expelliarmus."

The WHOLE POINT is that Harry's strengths were in what Voldemort didn't understand: love, loyalty, selflessness, etc. And maybe we could have killed Voldemort once we had the Hallows, but Dumbledore stresses that only Harry, with his principles and characters, was meant to unite the Hallows in the first place. So, yeah, we could have done it, after Harry had done all that hard work including, you know, willingly dying to save everyone.

Okay, finished reading the thread (until it updates again, that is) and have a few more random comments. This is the last, I swear ;)

- Apparently Dumbledore TOLD Snape (who was a double agent then) to purposefully only reveal parts of the prophecy, thus willingly causing the murder of the Potters.
- Harry being on the name and cover of every Harry Potter book demands that he be like Superman. Funny, I don't remember Jane Eyre or Emma being awesome, all-powerful heroes. But the books are named after them, so HDU Bronte and Austen D:< I demand you both write a posthumous revision of your books featuring Jane setting Thornfield Hall on fire with her mind and Emma slamming Mr. Knightley into a wall everytime he criticizes her.
- Dumbledore was jealous of Harry and secretly wanted him dead.
- The books should have been filled with amazingly tedious scenes so people wouldn't get confused later (why is Myrtle helping Harry? It doesn't make sense unless we show him visiting her every week!)
- Completely ignores the fact that Harry alone could kill Voldemort because he was equipped with the necessary things to destroy him: some of his own powers, such as Parseltongue, and an intimate mental/emotional connection.

What I'd like to see is three different versions of the books. (1) The original version. (2) A light, frothy version with Mundungus Fletcher and so forth as the main villains. (3) And a dark, psychologically realistic, Stephen King version.

I just think that would be the coolest thing EVER. But y'all are like dinner guests on the Titanic. Here I am, trying to convince the chef to bring us out a round of cheesecake and apple streudel, and everybody is saying, "Oh, no. I'm trying to cut back. Anyway, that would ruin the whole rest of the dinner."

The ship's sinking, y'all. Let's splurge just a little bit! It's never been done before? Hey, just one more innovation for Ms. Rowling to be responsible for! See, I've got everybody's best interest in mind here.

I'm gonna say it again...What. A. Dick.

Sigh. My better judgement is to go no where near that "essay" - its Saturday morning and I've got tonne's of housework to do, and its also really sunny today and I NEEEEEED to catch up on this weeks washing.

But ... I'm going to save the stupid thing anyway and have a look after dinner. Who knows? With a packet of tim tams and a bottle of shiraz it might be interesting.
