The HMS STFU - Weasley-bashing fic ahoy!
|
| | Subject: | Weasley-bashing fic ahoy! | | Time: | 12:18 am |
|
| I'm pretty sure I've mentioned the Ron The Death Eater page on TV Tropes before. It's relatively new, and I've been keeping an eye on it. Thought you all might like to have a look at some examples of the sheer WTF typists can get up to.
"No, you have fame fortune girls throwing themselves at you and best of all everywhere you go in this world people will know who you are and I am the sidekick," yelled Ron "And dam it you took the one thing I had that you didn't have Hermy was mine!" (A New Beginning)
"...and he [Ron] apparently was promised Hermione as a reward for his manipulation of myself over the years, by none other that Dumbledore, in cahoots with Molly. They were going to dose me and Hermione, set me up to be killed in the battle with Tom, and take my estates to be divided up between their little coalition.. Ron was to get Puddlemere as a present,Ginny and Molly the Potter name and money.. this is something I will not forgive." (Bring To Order)
"It's not what I want, Potter, but what my sister wants. You see, when you married Hermione, Ginny was terribly jealous, she wanted you as her husband. So, she and I hatched this plan. If your family was killed, then she could comfort you and worm her way into your heart and eventually be your wife. Hermione was supposed to be mine too but you ruined that for me. I'm sad she had to die but I'm not about to have your leftovers as it were. So the deal is this: You agree to marry Ginny and you can have your children back. Ginny always wanted children and she doesn't particularly care that they're Hermione's either. An adoption potion can take care of that." (Erasing History—note that in addition to killing Hermione, Ron then goes on to MURDER HARRY’S CHILDREN IN FRONT OF HIM, even though Harry had pretended to yield to his demands. Harry manages to defeat Voldemort, and then is apparently thoroughly stymied by RON?)
Molly: Ginny, you've got to calm down. Minerva has caught you four times with different boys. Ginny: That just goes to show that she's not as informed as she thinks. She missed five others, Mum. Look, with everything I'm doing for you, you can cut me some slack. That pathetic half blood upstairs must be a eunuch. I haven't managed to get a bit of action out of him. (Harry Potter and the Marriage Contracts—the author seems to utterly hate Ginny, I've noticed)
More DosingHarryWithLovePotion!Ginny fics (because clearly there aren't tnough of those--seriously, it's a freaking subgenre!): The Pureblood Conspiracy, Harry Potter and The Acts of Betrayal, Antithesis, Summer of Independence... and a whole essay that tries to “prove” Ginny was doing this in canon.
There’s one time-travel fic (post-Epilogue) that has Ginny (who is suddenly EEEVIL) poison all three of her children and then try to do the same to Harry, so she can “have the Potter fortune and fame” all to herself. Harry then kills her. After disassociating himself from the Weasleys, who he blames for the whole thing, Harry goes into the past and, among other things, sterilizes Molly Weasley after Ron is born. Check out the summary: “The Deathly Hallows Epilogue was truly unsatisfying. Here's the rest of the story that begins about two years after the DH Epilogue. Not for Ginny enthusiasts. Character Deaths. Time Travel. Avenging!Harry.” . . . The author (a guy, of course) not only loves the MustacheTwirling!Dumbledore trope but wants to have its babies. He seems to loathe all of Harry’s canon influences (save, strangely enough, for Sirius Black). Fortunately, he seems to have stopped writing character-derailing HP fic and is sticking with Naruto.
Good freaking grief…
Another from the FixFic page: "Ginny Returns", a time-travel fic that has Ginny go back after Harry is dead and the war lost, fix EVERYTHING... and still take the time to bash Ron every few minutes for being a twelve-year-old boy (even his own sister hates him!). The author has a hard-on for Ron-hate.
Gah...
Also, the Harry Potter section of the Alternatative Character Interpretation page is top-to-bottom wank, though to be fair it might just be listing said alternate interpretations. The Just Bugs Me page is definitely wanky.
The Draco In Leather Pants page even links to STFU.

| Do you have a link to the TVTropes page? (Yes, I'm well aware of its nature, I've spent entire days there.)
I've always wondered why Harmonians had to come up with the love potion "theory" to explain why Harry was attracted to Ginny. It's not hard. It boils down to two main points:
1. She's attractive. 2. Harry is heterosexual (sorry, H/D fangirls).
Any further explanation is superfluous. The only question is why they remained together for two decades (and probably longer), but that's unnecessary to the plot.
I have to admit a liking to seeing Evil!Ron in fanfic, but only if it's down well. Thus, 99.9% of non-Harmonian fic and 100% of Harmonian fic is instantly excluded. Having Ron turn to the Dark Side because Harry and Hermione did the nasty is ridiculous - I'd much rather see him turn because Ginny or another of the Weasleys were murdered by the Death Eaters, and he saw it as the only way to protect his family, and was ultimately corrupted by Dark Magic. But not only is that too complex for most fanfic authors and readers to comprehend, it's also too much like Star Wars. I suddenly have an image of Harry and Ron dueling over a pit of lava, Harry shouting, "You can't win AnakinRon, I have the high ground!"
Harmonians' (and other fans) hatred of Molly, in my opinion, is that she's a mother hen, and since most of them are teenagers, they're required by law to hate her. The idea that Dumbledore told Molly that Harry would be at Platfrom 9 3/4 has some merit, but think about it. Dumbledore wants Harry to remain loyal to him, so why have him meet with the Weasleys? None of them were involved in the last war, while the Longbottoms were - and were in fact in the Order. They're loyal to Dumbledore, Neville's in Harry's year - it makes a lot more sense.
In case anyone is wondering, Harry Potter and the Marriage Contracts is a Harem!Harry fic. I've come across it before, and yes, it's awful. Well, the writing is decent, but the fact that Harry and Hermione have no problem with inviting Daphne Greengrass into their marriage is enough to make one's head asplode. Seriously, am I the only that sees both of them as fairly conservative? Or at least, not liberal enough to engage in a polygamous relationship? Seriously?!
*Sigh* And that's all I will say. Teal deer, indeed.

| I found a post by Rhemus from fiction alley that captures this perfectly (concerning the claim about Ginny and love potions):
Ginny bashers insist that she must have used a potion to make boys fancy her. At age 15, she grew boobs. Worse than that, many teenage Muggle girls grow boobs and suddenly boys are interested in them. The Muggle Prime Minister cut a deal with the Ministry of Magic. The Government is putting this boob growing potion in the water supply.
As you said, anything further is superfluous. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| I think you're confusing that fic with another. He just ends up with Daphne Greengrass. I can't remember what happens to Hermione, but there's lots of "Weasleys - so evil, but in a stupid way!" going on.
It was so obviously wish fulfillment. "Oh, if only attractive girls were sending me naked photos." | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | Speaking of TV tropes, I noticed yesterday that C**** was mentioned on the "Hollywood Pudgy" page. Harmonians keep popping up when you never expect them. | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |
| What annoys me about fics like this is they usually dis on Ron to make way for whoever their favorite character is. Also, I don't think all the Molly-bashing is reflexive mother-dislike from teenagers. Some of Molly's behavior annoys me too, because of associations with my own dealings with an overprotective parent eons ago.
That Ginny Returns fic? I'd forgotten about all the Ron-bashing in it. Alas.
That other fic, "Time to Fix the Mistakes"? Heh, even the hardcore DLP brigade folks thought it was overdone (seeing as it's hit their Recycling Bin) and they're usually the first to go HUK HUK HUK GINSLUT.
There's love potion done well, and there's just character bashing for the sake of it. Too bad way too few fics do the former.
PS, for bonus character bashing and in-fic wank, I remember one that had Hermione and Ginny conspiring to dose Harry with a love potion, and had witty!Draco Malfoy in the Cassandra Claire vein. I forget the name, however.
OT:
I always thought Molly Weasley's loud question, "Where is Platform 9 3/4?" to be more along the kind of rhetorical 'parental guidance' type questions some parents like to use to reinforce lessons previously taught.
To see a grand conspiracy starting with that one statement is a stretch, IMO.
That said, it's probably also understandable given that even Arthur's relatively enlightened stance regarding Muggles still inherently treats them as inferior. Molly may have honestly not realized she was speaking loud enough for people to hear besides just her children.

| Whoever created the Ron The Death Eater fic page seems to have noticed that tendency--Ron's friendship to Harry and Hermione must be downplayed or outright eliminated... or suddenly he was always such a lousy friend that they drop him voluntarily. It's insane. Apparently Ron is not speshul enough.
Yeah, I couldn't get through "Ginny Returns"--the author went out of her way to cram in as much Ron-bashing wherever she could as possible. Come on! He's twelve!
I loathe the love-potion cliche. I can't help thinking JKR does too, and introduced it in HBP so she could say "No, THIS is what love potion does!"
I think DisobedienceWriter just has a thing for OotP-ANGRYYY!Harry and needed a way to bring him back. Because Harry can't be, you know, HAPPY, right? | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |
| I should know better than to follow a link to TVTropes, because I start opening up tab after tab and there goes an hour or two... but it IS damn entertaining (and informative). I love the term "Flanderization". :D
I also love this: Named for the tendency in Harry Potter fanfics where Draco turns good and hooks up with Hermione to have Ron lose his mind and, often, join Lord Voldemort just for a chance at killing the sainted Malfoy. (Harry Potter himself doesn't get hit as hard with this because he's not in the canon Hermione pairing.)
Harry isn't "in the canon Hermione pairing" says YOU! I know thousands of Harmoanians WHO KNOW BETTER!!!! | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |
| It's amazing to me how many things mentioned on the "It Just Bugs Me" page can be simply addressed or answered canonically if one simply pays attention or does not completely miss the point.
It's also amazing to me how much I learn about this fandom whenever I get mired down in TV Tropes - For example much of the HP fandom is actually a Fan Dumb and/or a Misaimed Fandom. | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |

| But isn't that what the ItJustBugsMe pages are? A forum for Tropers to go and ask questions about a TV show/Movie/Video Game/etc and have it answered by those who understood it the first time around?
And some of those questions are pretty legitimate. I never got that wand ownership stuff, either.

| | Not just IJBM: there's a bit on the "WallBangers/Literature" about Ginny being worried about Harry hooking up with Cho in DH, or worrying about him potentially being interested in Gabrielle. Why would she be irrational about romantic matters? It's not like Ginny is some sort of teenage girl, or anything. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |
| | I wonder if Misaimed Fandoms can go the other way, evil-izing nice characters. (I've seen that a lot, and not only on HP fandom). | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| Since we're on the subject of Weasley-bashing, I found this just yesterday: community.livejournal.com/hp_essays/209560.html
It's a just-pre-DH essay on their possible fates. The fun starts in the comments, where someone familiar turns up to troll. The time and effort she invests in hating on a bunch of fictional characters is truly alarming. | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |
| Oh christ on a crutch, marionros came along with her Jesus Crazy Cakes on a Cracker. *facepalms*
I'm forcing myself to read it so I can see when she brings it around to be all about Snape and how nobody is good enough to even shine his shoe.

| I ship Marionros/Mary_j! They always show up together.
PS/SS - He gets dry corned beef for lunch. His mum always forgets that he hates corned beef. Then, she knits him a maroon sweater. He hates that color, and she *always* makes maroon sweaters for him. (Having just stared to knit, I know the sort of effort and intent it takes to make a sweater!)
My dad forgets that I dislike certain things and/or makes things I've said I don't like because he thinks I should develop a taste for them - and I only have one sibling, not six. Also, it really doesn't take that much effort or intent to make a sweater, n00b, it just takes time, and not even that much when you're sufficiently experienced and don't have the internet using up your handiwork time. *guiltily looks at pile of alpaca next to the mirror* | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| The other thing I noticed was an entry on the Dethroning Moment of Suck page, in which someone nominated Molly's killing of Bellatrix as the moment the whole thing fell apart for them - on the grounds that given who Bellatrix had killed already, Molly simply shouldn't have been able to nail her. Really it's quite simple: Molly in a bloody rage is more of a handful than Bellatrix expected and Bellatrix was on the back foot from the start. Molly kept her focus and Bellatrix didn't. Molly had determined from the very start that Bellatrix wasn't going to walk away alive, and fought accordingly - most good wizards don't fight to kill.
Hell, even Neville's grandmother managed to hospitalize an Auror who tried to sneak up on her and then managed to stay on the run until she turned up for the big battle. Granted, Dawlish is far from the best, but still...
I suspect Molly is who JKR really meant when she was talking about someone who performs some quite remarkable magic late in life - not Petunia or Mrs Figg, for example, suddenly pulling something out of her allegedly Muggle or Squib arse in a moment of desperation, but Molly rising above herself to kill the third most dangerous Dark Wizard/Witch in history.
It's not heresy to say JKR occasionally confused things in interview, possibly because she was trying to keep track of what she could and couldn't tell us without spilling the beans and occasionally conflated characters or put things in that didn't have the meaning we thought they did (e.g. Mark Evans, no relation to Lily at all; the proto-list of students which made Hannah Abbott a Muggleborn, and then her being at least Halfblood in canon). | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |

| | Not to mention Bellatrix didn't have her wand and given that this happened in a book dedicated to wandlore the fact that she might have been hampered by this is frequently overlooked by fans. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

Just to note, JKR stated in a post-DH interview that she decided against the whole "someone doing magic late in life" thing. It was one of those things she had thought about but then decided it didn't work in the end. | | (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

| I love how Molly killing Bellatrix is both on the "Dethroning moment of Suck" page AND the "Crowning moment of Awesome" page. What a fandom. ;)
I don't see how Molly couldn't have been able to defeat her. It doesn't matter if a person is highly strong and a good duelist; they can still make fatal mistakes (especially if they're a few fries short of a Happy Meal like Bellatrix). Plus, seeing what Molly has been through and what she'd do for her children, it's possible that her anger/protective instincts leveled her up a bit. After all, there are cases of adrenaline rushes and such where people do things that make you go "...(S)he was able to do THAT?!"

| Ok, so I read the essay about the Love Potion theory.
-sigh-
The author seems to forget that love potions get you, like... really desperate and horny, and Harry wasn't acting like that at all in book 6. Sure, he was hormonal xD, but not as much as Ron when he swallowed Romilda's potion.
That, to me, is the main evidence that Ginny didn't use a love potion; setting aside that the contrary seems, you know, incredibly impausible and ilogical.
This line made me laugh, though:
Indeed she has heard it straight from the mouth of the Boy Who Wouldn’t Date Her
lol, it's so cruel and funny :D | | (Reply to this) (Thread) |
