TWoP and those bloody Invasion Ads
I did something I thought I'd never do - I downloaded adblocking software basically because those ads for that new ABC TV series "Invasion" at TWoP where fucking my computer over badly (and I have a pretty damn good computer AND I use Mozilla Firefox to boot).

I mean everytime I passed my mouse over the fucking ad it frooze up my brower to play the same damn thing, over and over and over again. I am not going to NOT watch that show on Principle now (heck the reason I never saw "The Core" was because of those horrible 'electrical superstorms' ads it did).

I actually do believe in advertising to support sites but:

A: TWoP isn't a favorite site of mine. I stick to the lower decks/basement forums to talk in a few shows well away from the mods. Occasionally popping into an odd thread. I don't like the site period, but it is the only damn place to talk about some of my favorite childhood shows.

B: I actually have been fiddling with the popup blocker program majorly so the only site effected will be TWoP and thus only it will be hurt in terms of revinue source (well this isn't counting any old site that still does popup ads or takeover invasion ads - those sites can go to Hades - but any site advertising a few resonable non-invasive ads to earn a few extra bucks to keep it running I have no issues with and I'll happily allow those ads to appear).

Anyway. First post. *waves*

Eventually, somebody will have to create a new, superior website to TWoP.

I agree with you, I only look because, really, there's nothing else. (Imdb is scary.)

God help me, I actually have to come to TWoP's defense here. They have no control over the ads. I know, I have the same dumbass ads all over my own website. It's either that or fork out $500/month for the bandwidth. I hate their blinking, yapping, pop-upping little guts, but I'm stuck with them regardless. Perhaps one day people will finally hate the ads enough to pay a subscription for a website... but I doubt it.

I loathe ads. I go for subscriptions over ads any time I can.

Then you get bullshit like The Onion, where I paid for a premium account so that I never had to see ads again, and then they reconfigured the whole thing and got rid of premium accounts, so that EVERYBODY sees ads, period. And the layout's been changed to maximize page clicks, and they're AWFUL blinky ads.

And I still haven't seen any of my money refunded yet, either.

SO. FUCKING. PISSED.

(middle finger directed at them, not you or twop.)

Issues are TWoP has said no to subsciptions time and time again. In fact for the most part they have been pretty anal retentive about the issue (and since we know the scary amount of disposable income alot of those members have, I have oftened wondered what is stopping them).

I honestly don't know about Yahoo, but I have a friend who runs a pretty large board using UGO ads, and UGO get be a bitch but he has an agreement with 'em in terms of what they can run and cannot run (it mainly involves no casino or sex ads etc) - but he also has a say over the level of invasive ads - sadly there are many levels to invasive ads as well. It really is all depending on how much money Glark wants to sucker out of Yahoo. He could easily go down the less invasive ad path if he wanted to - but obviously less money for Wing Chung to get lipo with.
