I thought "nitwit" meant "having the intelligence of a nit"? So you're probably safe enough.
Frankly, though, I'm starting to wonder if there is a non-ableist way to call someone stupid, or if the very idea is problematic. Sure, some people refuse to learn or don't know things they should - but I'm not sure how I feel about insulting someone's ability to learn, or using the lack thereof as an insult. You know?
