Well, what can we say. This IS [info]bleachness
So, remember that the last Bleach wank had a note about about not-so-funny stuff posted on [info]bleachness? Well, I guess it can be posted here, and thankie to the mice on wank_report for that one too.

Bleach chapter 450 comes out with Orihime taking up pages of pretty much being a moe-blob. Some think it's cute, the folks over at Bleachness don't agree. The general consensus is that Kubo's a hack because he wasted pages on Orihime wibbling over donuts, which would be valid point if it weren't mulled over at length in true bleachness style.

How dare Orihime like the hero and not be angsty anymore when her life has sucked so much! Let's use armchair psychology on her! Because we say so!

Anon wonders if Orihime's like this because she's experienced some mental trauma and could be bi-polar or autistic

"Taking into account the amount of traumas she faced it's no wonder she has developmental deficits - but, even though it's cute, I really wonder how old Orihime is. At times she acts like a 5 years old...I'd love for her to grow, to grow stronger and mature. It's kinda frustrating to see her acting like this, but that might be because I'd love her to progress in another way - neglecting the fact that it's her personality to act childishly at times."

"That is a very interesting thought and possible diagnosis.
I'm not too familiar with autistic disorders, that is why I don't want to decide or judge whether she actually could be diagnosed with an AD, but I rather tend to her using a repressing coping style. That's why she's regressing at times and her conflicting childish nuances of her personality shine through."

[info]abandonreality doesn't see what's the big deal and quickly gets the defensive responses of "this isn't about Orihime, it's about pacing," and does a little flounce. When debbiechan sees this, she's a little betrayed.

"Frankly, Manda-chan, I'm hurt. I thought were my friend and followed this community. I don't know what you're reading, but maybe not reading any real Orihime hate outside of LJ can distort one's perspective."

Now Kubo's purposefully forgetting all of Orihime's other relationships and having her only talk about Ichigo.

[info]qwirky, who some of you may remember from a previous wank for writing a 12 page response essay to an essay trying to debunk poor arguments made against IchiHime shippers, as well as debating at length about Chinese ground orchids, seems particularly angry.

"Kubo made Orihime who she is; he needs to man up and deal with the consequences of her actions in the series, i.e., deal with the fact that a lot of people don't like her or hate her. Kubo, either make Orihime finally grow up or stop wasting time on her that you could be using to develop other characters or the plot."

anon replies with:
"Yes, I prefer my women in shounen to be mentally strong, confident and active. I don't like them playing the role of a "always in need of protection" - DID. I don't like them to be portrayed just for comic relief, with dumb faces and irritating moments. (I'm too much of a feminist for this kind of behavior, I guess.)"

TL;DR, the people at [info]bleachness have not apparently been reading the series at all because they fail to notice that Orihime's always been eccentric and Kubo's pacing has sucked for a long time. And their ways to "deal" with it? Erm, no thanks.

ETA: Not even Bleach Asylum buys Bleachness's bullshit. And Deebie tries to play innocent about allowing such shit to happen.

I don't have a problem with girls who fight. I really don't! It's just that the most common defense for not liking any female character in a fandom tends to be "well I don't like how people write female characters because they're always weak/well she doesn't fight/well ..." when the same traits are often forgiven or overlooked in male characters. Scheming women are manipulative bitches, scheming men are clever dreamboats; soft, gentle men are dreamers and idealists while soft, dreaming women are passive wimpy princesses.

The problem does lie in that both of those archetypes tend to be assigned to villainous and heroic women more often than to men, and more often than other archetypes are assigned to women, but there are a lot of strong women who never have to fight physically to be badasses. I just get tired of people treating it like a checkbox on a "strong character creation" worksheet.

It's definitely necessary to have the girls be less damsel-y in a shounen series like Bleach. And there does definitely need to be more variety in female characters! It's just that a lot of people put up this pseudo-feminist "well, I only like female characters who can fight because it's more feminist." Even in fiction where physical prowess isn't important, it comes back to that the girls need to fight.* It could be political/intrigue-based historical fiction with the best female character ever and people in fandom will still scoff because she doesn't pull a sword out and start owning people.

(*Bleach is definitely a series where physical prowess is important and from the little I've read I sure wish the ladies were less damsel-y, but my raving is more generalized.)

I guess what I'm saying is I've just seen a lot of general hatred of any female character, fighter or no, shrugged off with "well, it's because I'm feminist" when there's not actually any feminism there at all. I don't think you (or anyone here) have this, but there are a lot of people out there who do.

With this I agree 100%

Sorry, the early post just read to me as the usual "No, women shouldn't do anything ever", probably cause I slogged through some rants of that nature yesterday considering RPGs. My reading fault due to misplaced anger. I apologize.

Yeah. Which is the better character, a woman who can fight but always needs a man to rescue her, or a woman who can't fight but who uses her other skills to get herself out of trouble and rescue others?

Maybe they should replace that line with: "well, it's because I'm butthurt shipper".
