Well, what can we say. This IS [info]bleachness
So, remember that the last Bleach wank had a note about about not-so-funny stuff posted on [info]bleachness? Well, I guess it can be posted here, and thankie to the mice on wank_report for that one too.

Bleach chapter 450 comes out with Orihime taking up pages of pretty much being a moe-blob. Some think it's cute, the folks over at Bleachness don't agree. The general consensus is that Kubo's a hack because he wasted pages on Orihime wibbling over donuts, which would be valid point if it weren't mulled over at length in true bleachness style.

How dare Orihime like the hero and not be angsty anymore when her life has sucked so much! Let's use armchair psychology on her! Because we say so!

Anon wonders if Orihime's like this because she's experienced some mental trauma and could be bi-polar or autistic

"Taking into account the amount of traumas she faced it's no wonder she has developmental deficits - but, even though it's cute, I really wonder how old Orihime is. At times she acts like a 5 years old...I'd love for her to grow, to grow stronger and mature. It's kinda frustrating to see her acting like this, but that might be because I'd love her to progress in another way - neglecting the fact that it's her personality to act childishly at times."

"That is a very interesting thought and possible diagnosis.
I'm not too familiar with autistic disorders, that is why I don't want to decide or judge whether she actually could be diagnosed with an AD, but I rather tend to her using a repressing coping style. That's why she's regressing at times and her conflicting childish nuances of her personality shine through."

[info]abandonreality doesn't see what's the big deal and quickly gets the defensive responses of "this isn't about Orihime, it's about pacing," and does a little flounce. When debbiechan sees this, she's a little betrayed.

"Frankly, Manda-chan, I'm hurt. I thought were my friend and followed this community. I don't know what you're reading, but maybe not reading any real Orihime hate outside of LJ can distort one's perspective."

Now Kubo's purposefully forgetting all of Orihime's other relationships and having her only talk about Ichigo.

[info]qwirky, who some of you may remember from a previous wank for writing a 12 page response essay to an essay trying to debunk poor arguments made against IchiHime shippers, as well as debating at length about Chinese ground orchids, seems particularly angry.

"Kubo made Orihime who she is; he needs to man up and deal with the consequences of her actions in the series, i.e., deal with the fact that a lot of people don't like her or hate her. Kubo, either make Orihime finally grow up or stop wasting time on her that you could be using to develop other characters or the plot."

anon replies with:
"Yes, I prefer my women in shounen to be mentally strong, confident and active. I don't like them playing the role of a "always in need of protection" - DID. I don't like them to be portrayed just for comic relief, with dumb faces and irritating moments. (I'm too much of a feminist for this kind of behavior, I guess.)"

TL;DR, the people at [info]bleachness have not apparently been reading the series at all because they fail to notice that Orihime's always been eccentric and Kubo's pacing has sucked for a long time. And their ways to "deal" with it? Erm, no thanks.

ETA: Not even Bleach Asylum buys Bleachness's bullshit. And Deebie tries to play innocent about allowing such shit to happen.

I was annoyed by this a lot when the ST reboot came out. "OMG WHY DIDN'T THEY LET UHURA FIGHT THEY'RE SEXIST!" - especially in relation to the bar fight. No, princess. Uhura did not abstain from kicking Kirk's ass because she was too much of a lady; she abstained from kicking Kirk's ass because she knew that getting into a bar fight just because some guy was hitting on her would be a foolish thing to do. If she had been in actual danger it would have been different.

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't give her a (more obvious) linguistic-badass moment akin to Chekov's mad dash to handle the transporters, or Scotty taking Spock Prime's notes and using it to beam Kirk and himself back to the Enterprise while it was traveling faster than light -- since, well, Chekov and Scotty and McCoy all got to be awesome at their professions. (While Kirk, Spock and Sulu got to kick ass.)

The Wiki reminds me that she was the one who found and translated the Klingon comm traffic that prompted Kirk to realize what trouble could be waiting for the fleet at Vulcan, but I wish more of a Big Deal was made about that, rather than her mentioning it to her roommate after the fact while Kirk is hiding in earshot. We're told she's a polyglot who, in addition to speaking Klingon, can also tell Vulcan from all three different dialects of Romulan, and is damn good at her job, but I would have liked to see it.

But, damn straight Uhura doesn't need to hit people or shoot a phaser to be a badass. Star Trek is full of frighteningly competent people who prove their competence by saving the day with technology (and technobabble)!
