Jackass is a fandom, right?
So obviously we all know that Ryan Dunn from "Jackass" was killed in a horrible car crash early yesterday morning. And many family members, friends, and fans are in mourning right now. But then Roger Ebert had to speak up. Needless to say, many are pissed at his insensitivity.

Sadly, I kind of figured something like this was going to happen considering the stunts "Jackass" is known for (and we all remember the "Steve Irwin had it coming" wank), but still... that doesn't excuse Ebert's words at all.

Beware the comments in the MSN article, they are just as bad as Ebert's original tweet.

ETA: I would normally agree with the comments here as well, except that the police haven't actually confirmed that he was drunk. If it turns out that that's what happened, that's one thing. But... I'd rather wait to find out the results before I agree with one side or the other.

ETA 2: Apparently Ebert has apologized to Dunn's family and friends saying he tweeted too soon. From People.com

...Yeeeahhh, I have no sympathy for a dude who decides to drive drunk then gets himself dumbassidly killed. Especially when said person made a career out of doing things that could very well get himself killed.

And yes, I am thankful they only killed themselves and not some innocent driver who happened to be on the road at the same time.

Unfortunately, there was a passenger in the car with him.

I couldn't give a shit about the insensitivity of Ebert's statement. It's true and everyone needs to know it.

This. If you want to be a jackass and hurt only yourself, that's one thing. When you kill someone else too you're a douchebag.

Also: while it has not been confirmed that the dude was drunk, it has been confirmed that he was drinking. I don't care if the legal limit is .8, if you're .7 and kill someone, you're still a douchebag.

Yeah. I'm kind of feeling the same way I do when people tell me that someone getting fileted in the bullring is a tragedy. Really can't work up too much more than a generalized vaguely melancholy feeling.

Having had friends killed by intoxicated assholes who got behind the wheel, I have no problem with what Ebert said. I'm not going to elevate this guy to sainthood and ignore his rampant, dangerous stupidity just because he's dead.

I'm just glad he didn't take any pedestrians with him.

Ever since I heard about it yesterday, I'm just, I don't know. I have had the hardest time working up sympathy. You look at the pictures of that damn car, and read the description of what happened... what else could it be than someone having too much to drink and getting behind the wheel?

Am I sad for his family and friends? Well yeah, of course I am. But, and I hate that I am this way, I honestly do, that's where my sympathy pretty much ends. He made the decision to drink and drive, and his friend made the decision to get into a car driven by someone who had been drinking, and unfortunately, they paid for it.

Personally, I think Ebert's comment was just in poor taste. Offensive? Not really. Insensitive? Perhaps, given the timing. Other than that, I think it was simply in very poor taste to say something like that when he didn't know for certain whether Dunn was drunk or not.

The love of my life got into a drunk-driving accident when he was 24 years old. He blacked out and wrapped his car around a tree, and then spent weeks in the hospital (shattered ribs, broken collarbone, collapsed lung). The scar from where the seatbelt went through his shoulder is still quite livid, and I have spent many an evening picking pieces of broken glass and plastic from his chest with tweezers.

He's 38 years old. Fourteen years on, and still he's daily reminded that he should be grateful he had no passengers, and that he hit a tree instead of another person.

I'm glad that he lived. I'm glad that I got the chance to know him. But if Dunn was drinking, I can't feel too much sympathy for him, only for his family and his passenger and passenger's family. What a stupid choice to make.

If it turns out he was drunk - yeah, I'm going to have to be on the side of Ebert. It's awful he died but if he was drunk then that was a choice he made and there is no one to blame for his death but himself. As for his passenger - if he was drunk he might not have realized that his friend, the driver, was drunk as well. It's the driver's responsibility to be sober, not the passenger's. If the passenger died because the driver was drunk then I do feel bad for the passenger and the family left behind.

Police have confirmed that Dunn was both drunk and speeding when he crashed.

"The initial crash reconstruction investigation determined that Mr. Dunn's vehicle was traveling between 132-140 mph at the time of the collision," West Goshen Police Chief Michael Carroll said in a statement Wednesday.

Toxicology testing by the coroner indicated Dunn's blood alcohol concentration was 0.196%, which is more than twice the legal state limit of 0.08, Carroll said.

Well, considering what harrylovesron posted above, and the fact that I'm someone who nearly lost her sister to a fuckwad deciding to drive while ridiculously drunk (head-on smash, sister's head swelled up to the size of a fucking pumpkin, and I was a really scarred 11 year old after that, I tell you), I'm with Ebert on this one.

Maybe he did post too soon. It's something he should have said now, really.

And I gotta say, probably needlessly, drink-driving and speeding are one of those things that makes me irrationally angry.
