Jackass is a fandom, right?
So obviously we all know that Ryan Dunn from "Jackass" was killed in a horrible car crash early yesterday morning. And many family members, friends, and fans are in mourning right now. But then Roger Ebert had to speak up. Needless to say, many are pissed at his insensitivity.

Sadly, I kind of figured something like this was going to happen considering the stunts "Jackass" is known for (and we all remember the "Steve Irwin had it coming" wank), but still... that doesn't excuse Ebert's words at all.

Beware the comments in the MSN article, they are just as bad as Ebert's original tweet.

ETA: I would normally agree with the comments here as well, except that the police haven't actually confirmed that he was drunk. If it turns out that that's what happened, that's one thing. But... I'd rather wait to find out the results before I agree with one side or the other.

ETA 2: Apparently Ebert has apologized to Dunn's family and friends saying he tweeted too soon. From People.com

Police have confirmed that Dunn was both drunk and speeding when he crashed.

"The initial crash reconstruction investigation determined that Mr. Dunn's vehicle was traveling between 132-140 mph at the time of the collision," West Goshen Police Chief Michael Carroll said in a statement Wednesday.

Toxicology testing by the coroner indicated Dunn's blood alcohol concentration was 0.196%, which is more than twice the legal state limit of 0.08, Carroll said.

So... even drunker and faster than previously assumed, then?

I wonder how all the angry fans who were telling Ebert he should feel like a jerk for assuming drunk driving was involved feel now.

Someone who lives around where this happened said that he was going that fast on a 25 mph exit on a dark road with a somewhat blind curve. Which, if true, is an exponential factor more stupid than going that fast, drunk, on a straightaway.

140mph??? I'm pretty sure that is the fastest my car will go - period. Sadly, he reaped what he sowed. I'm just sorry he got his passenger killed as well.

Holy shit. Why do people do these things? Do they get drunk and decide, "Hey, I want to die tonight! What's the messiest, most horrible way I can go?" I just don't understand the thinking!!

That thought actually crossed my mind. He was 33 years old -- usually people outgrow those kind of dangerous stunts by their mid-20s.

Dude's whole life was dangerous stunts so ... yeah. Self-preservation does not seem to have ever been a strong character trait with these guys.

Holy fuck. What a douchebag.

Holy mother Tiamat D:

It sucks that he died because it sucks when anyone dies early, and it sucks infinitely that his passenger died too. Just oh my flossing Christ what the fuck why would he do that at all D:

*looks up kilometer conversion*

Good grief. I don't think I've ever been in a car going that fast in my life, and I live in the land that has motorways without speed limit. Going that fast while being that drunk... it's lucky that he didn't take more people with him.

Yeah, same here (also in Germany :)). The fastest I have ever driven was maybe 160 km/h and that is *fast* and you better hope nothing happens in front of you.

Well, I have to admit that I like speed a bit and go at 160 km/h frequently when the road conditions allow it - but that is completely sober, and in places where it's allowed and possible to do so safely.

Dunn and Zachary Hartwell ... died from "blunt and thermal trauma"

*wince*

Let's just hope the "blunt" rendered them unconscious before the "thermal".
