After all that, I'm just a little curious what a european grocery store is like
Some Jim Butcher (he writes a fantasy mystery series called the Dresden Files, I think that's the name of the series, anyway) unfunny for you.

So are there any authors who aren't precious little flowers who will disappoint me when people call out racism in their works and/or comments? I can't say I would have expected much better from Mr. Butcher, but still. Disappointing.

John Scalzi's pretty good, from what I've seen.

I'd expect Nora Jemisin to take it well too, but that's only a hypothesis at this point.

I know this one!

Strange Horizons and the author C.S.E. Cooney got taken to task for a story by the latter published in the former.

This is Strange Horizons response - http://www.strangehorizons.com/blog/2011/07/on_working_toward_our_mission.shtml

And this is C.S.E Cooney's response http://csecooney.livejournal.com/322752.html

I wish all authors and professionals involved in publishing would follow their example in how to response to criticism.

Oh Jim Butcher No.

Had he not reacted so personally and started weeping about the internet was so meeeeeaaaaan, I would have just taken that passage as Harry being wrong-headed and racist. (Dresden files are all first person.) God knows Harry's not the most reliable of narrators.

Now I have to wonder if JB actually BELIEVES all the nonsense in Harry's head.

"Fuck you Jim Butcher" is neither criticism, nor criticism of my text.

Thanks, Jim Butcher, for letting us know that we're not allowed to express anger when you insult our homes!

Apparently he got so upset by someone cursing at him that he forgot all the criticism written before and after that! He writes an awfully dark story, you'd think he'd be a bit tougher.

*shakes head*

Oy vey.

I will concede this to Butcher: I can see how one could take the use of an F-bomb directed at them somewhat personally. I too have a tendency to take negative responses to my statements rather personally.

But did he have to keep going on about it? Even if he was still angry, that's what stepping away from the computer to seethe for a bit is for (something I've also done when I feel overwhelmed during online interactions).

On the bright side, new Dresden Files book out. Yay?

I'm going to have to assume Butcher (who I don't know squat about) has a history of being clueless, because coming to this cold, it isn't precisely a steaming pile of Fail.

I'm also kind of bothered by the current meme that "the tone argument", when flipped on its head, means any angry or insulting behaviour from an oppressed person is acceptable, and that oppressed people can never in the course of fighting that oppression legitimately hurt privileged people. No, in fact, privilege doesn't make a person emotionally invulnerable, and oppresion doesn't make you always morally right.

Am I the only person in the world who doesn't care if someone messes with geography for the purpose of a book or a TV show? I mean clearly it's not Chicago As We Know it. I don't care if he moves locations around.

As for everything else that's wrong, I just assume it's the character's flaws and keep going. Butcher should've just said "I am not a wizard named Harry who lives in Chicago" and shut the hell up.

Considering that Jim Butcher used 'tarbaby' to describe a black servant creature in his last book, I don't expect that much better from him anyway.

More to the point of this particular wank, he also notes in that passage about Hyde Park that the (all white, if I recall correctly) Alphas have been patrolling and cleaning up the crime there. So apparently what this black neighborhood needed was some white people to save it from itself.

As a fan of the Harry Dresden series (note: fan of series, not fan of author), this doesn't surprise me. None of this surprises me in the least. After some fail quite a while ago, I generally stay very far away from Butcher's blog and any mention of his name in the news. I just came across this, and... sigh.

I have this theory that a lot of authors take a while (if ever) to admit they're wrong or have done something questionable because it takes a lot of not doing either to get published in the first place. Authors like Jim C. Hines (who actually reacted well to someone pointing out fail in The Stepsister Scheme, and promised to do better, and actually did better) are the exception rather than the rule. All the more reason to avoid reading author blogs and tweets unless you actually are a fan of the author.

Also, I feel weird saying I'm a fan of a series with problematic racial issues. But then again, I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes, and have started posting a re-read that I know will expose racism, homophobia, and sexism in the canon text (indeed, I'm near the precipice of five chapters of such). And then there's the failfest that is The Lord of the Rings. But Holmes is Holmes, hobbits are hobbits, and Harry rides dinosaurs in the middle of thunderstorms with a hobbyist playing polka on an accordion. Sometimes there is awesome juxtaposed to the awful.

The best thing a fan can do is be aware of the shortcomings of a series. If you still love it, there's nothing wrong with that. If you hate it, then things were never meant to be, and there are many fish in the sea. And even if you love it, it's still your gods-given mission to find other works out there.

If you want to freshen your carpets, cleaners in Sydney advise to make your own, home-made carpet freshener. This is an effective and cheaper way to take the bad odours out of your carpets and rugs.
