After all that, I'm just a little curious what a european grocery store is like
Some Jim Butcher (he writes a fantasy mystery series called the Dresden Files, I think that's the name of the series, anyway) unfunny for you.

So are there any authors who aren't precious little flowers who will disappoint me when people call out racism in their works and/or comments? I can't say I would have expected much better from Mr. Butcher, but still. Disappointing.

Jim C. Hines, probably but not definitely.

I think he's a pretty fair bet.

John Scalzi's pretty good, from what I've seen.

I'd expect Nora Jemisin to take it well too, but that's only a hypothesis at this point.

Another hypothesis at this point: Jess Nevins--who, so far, is chiefly a critic and historian, but has begun writing fiction--has expressly vowed to suck it up and accept such criticism without making excuses: http://ratmmjess.livejournal.com/210065.html

Aw, that doesn't surprise me. Jess is pretty awesome.

Scalzi is often thoughtful and willing to hear criticism, and he's done some great posts on privilege. OTOH, don't insult one of his BFFs, 'cause then he'll sic his army of commenters on your mean old feminist blog.

Re: Jemisin, she got into an argument with winterfox/pyrofennec at one point. But since it's winterfox we're talking about, you might surmise that Jemisin wasn't the one who ended up showing her ass there...

I know this one!

Strange Horizons and the author C.S.E. Cooney got taken to task for a story by the latter published in the former.

This is Strange Horizons response - http://www.strangehorizons.com/blog/2011/07/on_working_toward_our_mission.shtml

And this is C.S.E Cooney's response http://csecooney.livejournal.com/322752.html

I wish all authors and professionals involved in publishing would follow their example in how to response to criticism.

Well, that's refreshing at least.

Karen Healey and Jennifer Matarese, definitely. I can't help feeling Diane Duane would continue her awesomeness, but I have no proof.
