I'm on comic vine too and I haven't run into as much willful evil, but I don't find the comics-related discussions as interesting. (The reason I stick around at CBR is because I sometimes have interesting discussions about comics, there. I really don't blame anyone for leaving, though.)

I don't find it unbelievable at all, given how low the comic forum discussion bar is set.
