The DCnU: Now with more fail than ever!
Backstory: DC Comics has rebooted their entire universe with the DCnU and "The New 52", with 52 first issues of their titles, including Action Comics and Detective Comics. And new versions of familiar characters. Some of them more different than others. This has been... controversial to say the least. But where the fail has really hit the fan has been with DCnU!Starfire and Catwoman.

DCnU!Starfire is basically a scantily-clad wish fulfillment object in the first issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws #1. DCnU!Catwoman had sex with Batman at the end of Catwoman #1.

Comics Alliance's Laura Hudson has a well-written, well thought out response.

And another well-written response from a female fan.

A 7-year-old girl responds to the new, sexed up Starfire.

Shortpacked! does the math.

What does DC Comics have to say for themselves? "Pay atention to the ratings."

Edit: [info]thisfishflies reminds me that if you value keeping your blood pressure low, you should avoid reading the comments with those links.

And [info]spawn_of_kong points out Linkara's reactions to these changes (and others) for those who are interested.

Edit #2: [info]anarchicq says there's a survey being done by DC. But they only want to hear from certain people.

Patton Oswalt ragequits buying/reading DC after an encounter with a "New 52" survey taker in his local comic book store.

I always forget to not read comments. Every time.

And man does this make me angry. DC still hasn't recovred in my eyes from the ComicCon thing. This plus Teen Titans one from a few days ago... DC is nothing I'll even thing about. Not even going to try.

Honestly, I was with the little girl. Teen Titans (the show) was fucking awesome. I liked all the characters and they were done well, and yes, I really liked Starfire.

What I've been seeing from that comic... are they back to tracing from porn? Are they back to deciding women have plastic spines? I think I've seen movies that were less blatant.

Wondered when this would hit here, was planning a writeup myself.

And for comparison I'm tempted to pull out my old Chaos!Comics Lady Death and Purgatori issues for comparison and while both woman were SERIOUS eyecandy nothing was as bad as the shots I've seen of Catwoman and Starfire, I mean it's almost a whole page before we see Catwoman's FACE but we are treated to many panels of her chest and butt adorned in red lacy underwear, or painted on black latex.

Starfire had some kick ass pages, saving the guys, yes...but many MORE pages dedicated to her prancing around in a bikini...which was originally suppost to be 'transparent' before they switched it to her normal purple

In fact Brian Pulido (before he went off the deep end) was worried that nobody would buy Lady Death #1 because it DIDN'T have wall to wall T&A shots of Lady Death.

You just made me all nostalgic... after I essentially ragequit nearly all Marvel/DC in the late 90s/early 2000s, Chaos was one of my last stops on my way out of comics entirely. I remember that even at the time I thought it funny that the books for those characters who were essentially created to be eyecandy were *less* sexist and *more* interesting than near anything the mainstream comics threw up at the time.

And Chastity was fucking awesome.

Yeah, you don't qualify if A) You live outside the US, B) You haven't actually bought any of the comics and C) If you answer anything other than "Never heard of it" to the question about "Nerak."

There are probably other reasons, too, but I haven't heard them.

DC is giddy that their first issues sold out? Duh, they're FIRST ISSUES. Did no one learn from the Todd McFarlane Spiderman #1 speculation fiasco with the four different covers and the 8x10 glossies with paragraphs on the back? He only lasted 14 issues and went on to build his own competing comic book company and Marvel is now owned by Disney.

Issue 1 of ANYTHING way outsells any future issue. Next year we'll see how those numbers are holding up.

As someone else has pointed out, that ratings bullshit doesn't fly very high when it's rated the same as Supergirl, a book they they're actively trying to market towards teenage girls. Then again, I don't know how good/terrible Supergirl is after the reboot.

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record on the subject, between here and other sites, but Hudson has really nailed the fact that DC is missing the entire point of the complaints. It's not the fact that she's sexy and has sex that is the problem. Starfire has always had that element to her character. The problem is that their fucking stupid little memory retcon has transformed her from a character who always had agency in her sex life, actively seeking out things she enjoyed physically and emotionally, into a half-mindless wank-fodder prop whose memory problems are being taken advantage of by her teammates, both of whom fucking should -and used to, especially Jason- know better.

The relaunch has become a step-by-step guide to franchise-suicide. The only issue I have read so far is "Static Shock #1" which was good, but I don't see myself continuing to read other DC comics in the future. Maybe I'll pick up Batwoman and Wonder Woman but I don't know...

Someone pointed out that women not only seem to be getting the most changes and I thought that was pretty accurate. I mean, we're getting new 'sexy' versions left and right. I'm a little afraid for Spoiler now. But oh wait she's a 'Bat' so she'll be pretty safe. Oh and speaking of, let's not even get started on just how fucked the timeline is now. Every event with 'Crisis' in it's name happened and so did Batman RIP and Blackest night.

All within ten years. THAT DOESN'T WORK. Lets not even get into how some of those events had a lot to deal with relationships between the characters (ESPECIALLY Identity Crisis) which are now gone.

I just... It's amazing just how badly they've fucked this up. At least I still have Rage Kitty.

Everytime I think I should check out the reboot shit like this happens. :/ I really don't want to give DC money lest they think they can keep pulling bullshit, but I'm afraid that they won't get why people are pissed with them and just pull any series that doesn't make enough money, i.e. all the interesting ones D:

On the flip side of this whole debacle, while DC's been running superhero comics into the ground, webcomic author Aaron Diaz (of Dresden Codak, one of my favorites) has been busy lately doing the exact opposite:

He started out with his personal list of the top ten best and top ten worst superhero and supervillain redesigns.

Then he decided to put his (considerable) design skills where his mouth is, and designed new costumes (and in some cases, full story reboots) for five historically mistreated characters, including Starfire and Wonder Woman (along with a bonus link to a short Batman reboot he did a few months ago. A couple days ago, he did a fantastic Justice League revamp, and just today he posted a short little comic illustrating the problems with cleavage exposure starring Power Girl and Wonder Woman.

Long story short, I wish this guy was in charge of DC.

Is Batman similarly depicted in the Catwoman issue or in the Batman issue? Shirtless scenes, a panel of his ass - something that can be easily interpreted as pandering to the female gaze?

Not that I, as a woman, don't consider Catwoman hot to look at. I just want to verify if DC's at least included some eye candy for the girls.

If Batman is similarly sexualized, then okay. But if it's only Catwoman, then (sighs) obviously DC was only thinking of what guys want.

Starfire - I barely know about the character, but I think it's safe to assume that many youngsters would only know her from the Teen Titans cartoon wherein she's clearly depicted as naive and innocent. Not only does cartoons have a much wider audience reach than comics, it also aired not too long ago, too.

So yeah, have to agree that DC wasn't thinking properly when they decide to depict Starfire as such.
