Just go independent - there's good stuff in there. A couple of the DC imprints (irony, irony), especially Vertigo, have REALLY good stuff as well. And if you like superhero stories in general, you might want to look at America's Best Comics (Alan Moore-created self-contained now defunct imprint).
It's not that all comics suck. It's not even that all comics published by Marvel, DC or Image suck. It's just that the main lines tend to be run by douchey frat boys.
