The DCnU: Now with more fail than ever!
Backstory: DC Comics has rebooted their entire universe with the DCnU and "The New 52", with 52 first issues of their titles, including Action Comics and Detective Comics. And new versions of familiar characters. Some of them more different than others. This has been... controversial to say the least. But where the fail has really hit the fan has been with DCnU!Starfire and Catwoman.

DCnU!Starfire is basically a scantily-clad wish fulfillment object in the first issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws #1. DCnU!Catwoman had sex with Batman at the end of Catwoman #1.

Comics Alliance's Laura Hudson has a well-written, well thought out response.

And another well-written response from a female fan.

A 7-year-old girl responds to the new, sexed up Starfire.

Shortpacked! does the math.

What does DC Comics have to say for themselves? "Pay atention to the ratings."

Edit: [info]thisfishflies reminds me that if you value keeping your blood pressure low, you should avoid reading the comments with those links.

And [info]spawn_of_kong points out Linkara's reactions to these changes (and others) for those who are interested.

Edit #2: [info]anarchicq says there's a survey being done by DC. But they only want to hear from certain people.

Patton Oswalt ragequits buying/reading DC after an encounter with a "New 52" survey taker in his local comic book store.

Yeah, you don't qualify if A) You live outside the US, B) You haven't actually bought any of the comics and C) If you answer anything other than "Never heard of it" to the question about "Nerak."

There are probably other reasons, too, but I haven't heard them.

So...they're trying to lure in new readers but they're severely limiting their market research?

Yeah, DC, that makes sense.

They probably don't want us dirty feminists telling them we want better female characters without ever buying their shit.

So I lied and told them I'd bought the comics that I would consider buying if DC didn't hate women.

Yeah, that's what I did, too. I picked a random town from Wikipedia, used the zip code and filled everything else out based on what I *would* have bought if I wasn't so infuriated by DC's "choices" in characterisation etc.

This was also my strategy.

There were several titles on the 52 list that I would have bought if it weren't for DC's fail. So I just claimed that I bought those, and my survey was accepted.

Why are they not talking to comics fans who didn't buy any of the comics? That seems somewhat noteworthy.

Yeah - they have an option for "Read it but didn't buy it" but apparently if you didn't spend money on it due to total disgust you have no right to complain.

A) To skew the results.
B) I've heard some people speculate that the whole thing is more for Diamond publishers than DC itself.

Because they know that there are more than a few people who may have considered buying some issues but were alienated by the behind the scenes shenanigans or the awful content of the books. If they accepted submissions from those people, the results would look very different from the results they want with these surveys. They're essentially pulling the wool over their own eyes.

Although I agree this is part of the general fail, I can think of one actually valid reason: to eliminate the "complaining about shows you don't watch comics you don't buy" factor. There are people out there who will go on long but ultimately uninformed rants about things; consider all the recent moral panics about sex (and sometimes violence) in video games that the speaker hasn't actually played, but heard about from someone who heard about...

(I always press return ten seconds before I finish the thought. :p)

Except in this case, I think most of the people who are likely to complain are informed as to the content - thanks to the wonder of the internet, and scans, or picking up the issue in a comic shop and then quickly putting it back down in horror and/or disgust. Possibly more informed than the people at DC putting out this tripe.

There probably is a little bit of mob mentality and second- or third-hand repetition re: the unseen going on, but IMO it's small compared to the institutional FAIL and deafness (tone and otherwise) on the other side.

The problem with this is, though, that they DO have a category for "read but not bought" - so even if you DID read the titles and HAVE your own informed opinion which you'd like to share with DC you're rejected unless you actually bought the issue in question. Or, in other words: You're only allowed to have an opinion if you throw money at DC first.

I said I wasn't interested to Nerak and it let me take the survey.

I did make the mistake of buying one of the comics so I didn't lie about that part. I'm just glad that I bought the Teen Titans one to share with my nephews and it isn't too bad with the super huge boobs.

I used every textbox to lambast them for their hypersexualized T&A wish fulfillment show except for the box asking me what I thought of my local comic store which is rather awesome and, when I bought my comic, said "I wouldn't read some of these, if I were you. They're just boobs boobs boobs". So there's hope out there, I guess :/

Luckily, I'm an avid comics reader and had decided to try out a bunch of the new #1's, so I could answer honestly on it and gave my thoughts as well, on this and other topics.
(Not to imply I'm against the people who skirt the system to give DC an earful since they more than deserve it, I'm just happy to be using my comic buying habits for good!)
