The DCnU: Now with more fail than ever!
Backstory: DC Comics has rebooted their entire universe with the DCnU and "The New 52", with 52 first issues of their titles, including Action Comics and Detective Comics. And new versions of familiar characters. Some of them more different than others. This has been... controversial to say the least. But where the fail has really hit the fan has been with DCnU!Starfire and Catwoman.

DCnU!Starfire is basically a scantily-clad wish fulfillment object in the first issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws #1. DCnU!Catwoman had sex with Batman at the end of Catwoman #1.

Comics Alliance's Laura Hudson has a well-written, well thought out response.

And another well-written response from a female fan.

A 7-year-old girl responds to the new, sexed up Starfire.

Shortpacked! does the math.

What does DC Comics have to say for themselves? "Pay atention to the ratings."

Edit: [info]thisfishflies reminds me that if you value keeping your blood pressure low, you should avoid reading the comments with those links.

And [info]spawn_of_kong points out Linkara's reactions to these changes (and others) for those who are interested.

Edit #2: [info]anarchicq says there's a survey being done by DC. But they only want to hear from certain people.

Patton Oswalt ragequits buying/reading DC after an encounter with a "New 52" survey taker in his local comic book store.

As someone else has pointed out, that ratings bullshit doesn't fly very high when it's rated the same as Supergirl, a book they they're actively trying to market towards teenage girls. Then again, I don't know how good/terrible Supergirl is after the reboot.

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record on the subject, between here and other sites, but Hudson has really nailed the fact that DC is missing the entire point of the complaints. It's not the fact that she's sexy and has sex that is the problem. Starfire has always had that element to her character. The problem is that their fucking stupid little memory retcon has transformed her from a character who always had agency in her sex life, actively seeking out things she enjoyed physically and emotionally, into a half-mindless wank-fodder prop whose memory problems are being taken advantage of by her teammates, both of whom fucking should -and used to, especially Jason- know better.

From what I've heard, the new Supergirl isn't too bad. I've heard good things about Wonder Woman too, which just makes this whole mess even more depressing.

This. Sexism isn't okay at higher ratings either, DC.

While I haven't heard anything terrible about Supergirl so far, I cannot for the life of me figure out why they would have Supergirl wear a costume that emphasizes her not exactly fully covered crotch in a book geared towards teenage girls.

Then I remember that Jim Lee had the final say on all the costume designs, and suddenly everything makes terrible, terrible sense.

Jim Lee's design abilities are essentially like my kung fu skills - it'll look stupid and can only end in pain.

A useful question for artists undertaking to costume Supergirl: would you be comfortable with your teenage daughter showing up in that outfit at ComicCon?

I can see Lee's response: "oh you silly women, we covered up the cleavage for you and you just find something else to complain about"

That was me! (I think.) I bought Supergirl #1, and was pretty pleased with it. Her costume is terrible, and the story dragged a bit, but the art was pretty despite the terrible costume redesign and it did get me interested in Kara's character. I could definitely see teen girls liking the book.

Aaand I just filled out DC's survey and told them they should add an A to the end of Catwoman's T+ ratings, if they want to be accurate about it.

Because I'm really wanting to let my 13 year old son learn that having someone rip your face off deliberately, or sex without anything remotely resembling affection is a desirable state of affairs.

Yep. So goin' to go buy those for him right now.

You'd think knowing your friend was an amnesiac joyless caricature of her former self would kill the desire to fuck her, but apparently not.
