What the eff, people.
[Trigger warning for self-injury, homophobia, misogyny on ALL links, especially the ones hosted on Blizzard's sites]

Blizzard recently had their yearly convention for their three franchises, Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. Fans from all over the globe come to see it, and tickets usually sell out within hours (if not faster) of tickets going on sale. Many Blizzard employees have praised it for being a family event, but I've never been so I don't know how generally family friendly it is.

This year, their closing ceremony included a video from the lead singer of Cannibal Corpse, bashing alliance players in sexist and homophobic terms. Here is the censored version they played, and here are the uncensored comments. Megabitch provides the comments for those who don't want to watch Youtube.

Some of their employees replied to fan comments, although they mostly/only focused on the "Blizzard hates the Alliance!" complaints. Bashiok with a fauxpology, Zarhym with "It was just a joke!"

WoW_Ladies and Dear_Gnome both have mostly safe discussions but there are trolls and bigots. The WoW boards are not so safe, 1, 2, 3, 4 and oh god, so many more.

On a side note that could really get its own post but I have homework to stop putting off, a lesbian WoW player asked about Blizzard's intentions to have any canon gay characters and then posted about it and made a follow up. Her girlfriend also makes a post. Naturally, the whole thing triggered a lot of hate across the forums.

ETA: Worldofwarcraft apparently wants everyone to know that just because you're not on the WoW forums, you can still get plenty of douchery!

ETA2: Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftan, the band made up of Blizz employees, has put out an apology. Except it's not addressing the homophobia at all, and could easily be about just the alliance players.

ETA3: Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard, put out an actual apology.

I'm so glad I uninstalled WoW weeks ago. I told them I was canceling because I didn't feel like dealing with the rampant misogyny that has taken over the community. (It was always there, but it's gotten way worse since Cataclysm -- as has the game itself regarding sexism, homophobia, and racism.) Apparently that's the kind of community they want.

And BOY OH BOY do the binks get angry if you point this out.

it's like if it bothers you so much that I am discussion it, LITTLE BOYS, I am not the sensitive one. XD

Goddammit. WCIII was so damn awesome about female characters, how have we backslid like this.

I think it's because the main development team are working on their new MMO, Titan.

They're letting the second-stringers write for WoW. And yes,I include Metzen in this, if only because he should know better and be slapping idiots upside the head.

Elune on Her throne.

Did you see the worldofwarcraft post? With the victim blaming?

I've spent most of the afternoon angry and upset.

Fucking WoW players, learn some goddamn empathy. Goes double for the Blizz employees. Especially Samwise. I used to *like* him.

I've always had a knee-jerk dislike of Cannibal Corpse and their tedious brand of Death Metal. How nice of George Fisher to give me a good reason for it.

I've never heard of them before, but I hate death metal in general, so...

What he said is awful, but it also hits me as so incredibly desperate. "I play WoW! But I'm not like, a nerd. I mean, I play the HORDE! Not like those *censored* *censored* who play the Alliance! See, I'm still hardcore and awesome, right?" he says, as if the metal fans who don't play WoW give a hot fat in the wind whether you're a red dweeb or a blue dweeb. The guy's just kind of pathetic, really.

The fanboy dev bothers me a lot more. And the fauxpologies.

(I suppose I'll still play, though... for me it's a single-player game with an economy to play with and a chat channel. It's much more tolerable that way, and they've done a lot to make solo play more interesting. It's that or TOR, and I've got years and years of beef against LucasArts.)

I was waiting for this to hit unfunny. I've been furious about this since it happened. That this was sanctioned on a Blizzcon stage is just repulsive. I unsubbed from the game, won't be getting the expansion, and won't be buying anything Blizzard puts out unless they apologize in a REAL, "we fucked up" way, and sincerely make an effort to somehow rectify this shit. It's unreal that this was played. Argh. *seething*

Blizzard will never change unless they lose customers. If people just complain but don't quit, nothing will ever be different. That's the problem. Most people want to keep playing so they complain but don't back up those complaints with a cancelled account.

The thing is, they HAVE lost subscribers, hand over fucking fist. Their playerbase has haemorrhaged. A lot of them ditched during this expansion.

Blizzard, though, has stupid tunnel vision, and instead of wondering whether the bullshit juvenilia and fucking-up of beloved characters is driving people off (see: that stupid fucking Duke Nukem game for an example of this in action...sure, people BOUGHT it, but they sure as sugar did not fucking KEEP it; the game shop nearest me has a bin full of used copies, for dirt cheap), they assume it's gameplay mechanics.

No, dumbasses, it's your repeated attempts to market to the type of guys who labelled Coors Light 'gaybeer' because the commercials full o' cheerleaders 'were trying too hard, you know those guys are hiding something hurrhurr'. It's your alienation of the WCIII fans who got WoW off the fucking ground. It's your abandonment of everything that made that game good in favour of trying to draw in the 'oldschool' RTS fans who will NEVER give you the time of day because a MMORPG is not an RTS and never will be. The 'old herd' nerds you are angling to court will never pay attention to you because they see you as SELLOUTS. And they see your player base as full of idiotic raving kids.

And so it fucking goes. They're shooting themselves in the foot so very much.

Isn't this the same guy who performs the song "Fucked with a Knife" onstage and dedicates it to the women in the audience? Nah, couldn't be. Perhaps I'm mistaking him for some other lead singer of some other band named Cannibal Corpse.

Not surprised in the least. Disgusted, certainly. But not surprised.

I hate that I love Azeroth so much, sometimes. I really do. Because if I didn't, I could fuck right off without a second thought right now, for good (setting aside I just got an annual pass -_-). But I love this setting so much that it hurts, sometimes, and walking away from it is something I just don't know how to do. As badly as they've fucked it up, and continue to fuck it up, I love this universe so much, I love playing in that sandbox.

I can't go play TOR as much as I love Bioware, and love their support of LGBT players, because I love Star Wars but I don't have the same attachment to that universe. Ditto FFXI, LotRO and City of Heroes and basically every other MMORPG I've tried. (If Squeenix made one set in Ivalice, I'd jump ship in a heartbeat though.) If it were a Dragon Age MMO, I'd go play it, because that's the only setting in recent memory that's grabbed me by the tits the way Warcraft did back when I first started playing Orcs & Humans a dog's age ago.

So I'm basically fucked either way, as far as I can see. I make these terrible bargains with myself no matter how much this company shits on me and shits on the setting because if I leave it, I don't even have the fucked up things to fix. Does that even make sense? I don't know if I'm making sense. I just know that I purposefully avoided the conversations everywhere but on dear_gnome and wow_ladies because I was triggered enough by the little bit I saw being discussed elsewhere. Suddenly it feels like I'm back in high school being bullied and abused for being a dyke and no one in authority cares (or they say I deserve it). And I just can't. I don't have the spoons.

Goddammit, Blizz. I'm rather fond of Azeroth but you're doing your best to screw it up.

Also, as a Horde player (or, by now, ex-player who won't be bothering to renew her subscription) and metal fan, Corpsegrinder can sod off. I do hate the assumption that they have to talk like morons to be truly 'metal'. Idiot.

Also. Kung-fu pandas. The film was fun enough but you just know that Blizz will merrily trample through the garden of painful asian cultural caricatures in this new expansion; it's not like they haven't done that with other cultures already.

ONE MORE UPDATE!
[info]the__ivorytower
2011-10-28 05:10 am UTC (link)
There's a real apology.

Link here, text enclosed.

Apology from Mike Morhaime

Dear members of the Blizzard community,

I have read your feedback and comments about this year’s BlizzCon, and I have also read the feedback to the apology from Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftain. I’d like to respond to some of your feedback here.

As president of Blizzard, I take full responsibility for everything that occurs at BlizzCon.

It was shortsighted and insensitive to use the video at all, even in censored form. The language used in the original version, including the slurs and use of sexual orientation as an insult, is not acceptable, period. We realize now that having even an edited version at the show was counter to the standards we try to maintain in our forums and in our games. Doing so was an error in judgment, and we regret it.

The bottom line is we deeply apologize for our mistakes and for hurting or offending anyone. We want you to have fun at our events, and we want everyone to feel welcome. We’re proud to be part of a huge and diverse community, and I am proud that so many aspects of the community are represented within Blizzard itself.

As a leader of Blizzard, and a member of the band, I truly hope you will accept my humblest apology.

– Mike Morhaime
President, Blizzard Entertainment

Mike Morhaime always seemed like a stand up guy to me in the interviews I've read with him and such. So I'm relieved to see him step up and do the right thing here.

It sucks that it took this long and that we had to get through a heidipology to get there, but credit where it's due. I just hope they've learned something from this.
