What the eff, people.
[Trigger warning for self-injury, homophobia, misogyny on ALL links, especially the ones hosted on Blizzard's sites]

Blizzard recently had their yearly convention for their three franchises, Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. Fans from all over the globe come to see it, and tickets usually sell out within hours (if not faster) of tickets going on sale. Many Blizzard employees have praised it for being a family event, but I've never been so I don't know how generally family friendly it is.

This year, their closing ceremony included a video from the lead singer of Cannibal Corpse, bashing alliance players in sexist and homophobic terms. Here is the censored version they played, and here are the uncensored comments. Megabitch provides the comments for those who don't want to watch Youtube.

Some of their employees replied to fan comments, although they mostly/only focused on the "Blizzard hates the Alliance!" complaints. Bashiok with a fauxpology, Zarhym with "It was just a joke!"

WoW_Ladies and Dear_Gnome both have mostly safe discussions but there are trolls and bigots. The WoW boards are not so safe, 1, 2, 3, 4 and oh god, so many more.

On a side note that could really get its own post but I have homework to stop putting off, a lesbian WoW player asked about Blizzard's intentions to have any canon gay characters and then posted about it and made a follow up. Her girlfriend also makes a post. Naturally, the whole thing triggered a lot of hate across the forums.

ETA: Worldofwarcraft apparently wants everyone to know that just because you're not on the WoW forums, you can still get plenty of douchery!

ETA2: Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftan, the band made up of Blizz employees, has put out an apology. Except it's not addressing the homophobia at all, and could easily be about just the alliance players.

ETA3: Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard, put out an actual apology.

Oh Blizzard no ): Stop it I love you why are you doing this

Though this comment from one of the threads made me lol

And we all know Kael'thas is gay. It's just a fact.

Three guys, one woman in his posse and he gives her a lack luster intro.

It was a four man raid alright.

Kael and Illidan were basically married. To each other and also to Vashj.

Urgh, now I'm wondering if that's why they fucking derailed Kael ad Illidan so bad. oh noes teh ghei. I swear that's why they wrote Koltira out.

brb going to Blizz HQ, drop kicking them all and smashing their beer bongs.

My theory (which would require them to actually care), is that it's not Illidan. It's Gul'dan. Everything starts to make sense:

Figure this - Illidan consumed the Skull of Gul'dan, which is how he could get to Outland when no one else could (ignore the Dark Portal randomly opening, please). When Arthas stabbed him, he *did* kill Illidan and took his soul... but Illidan wasn't alone, soul-wise, in his body. So, when "Illidan" woke up, he was actually Gul'dan. It all starts to make sense: sucking up to the Fel Horde and making them stronger by giving them Magtheridon; moving into the Black Temple, Gul'dan's seat of power; enslaving the Draenei, whom Gul'dan hated; marginalizing the blood elves, whom an Old Horde warrior would despise; you can throw in homophobia if you want, if you assume Kael and Illidan were involved pre-Northrend, and Gul'dan was disgusted by it.

Kael gets to watch the person he loved and trusted, the person he nearly died defending, the person he vowed to follow into the heart of hell itself, is suddenly turning his back on everything he's ever done and ever cared for, and he loses it. His people are now addicted to fel magic, which is like trading in a nicotine addiction for a heroin addiction, he can never go back, his closest friend (Jaina) probably hates him because he said stupid things to her before he left... so he turns to the demons, and Kil'jaeden is all too willing to use him up and burn him out. So goes Kael's slide towards insanity.

Also? It makes sense that "Illidan" feels that he won against Arthas... because Gul'dan won when Arthas killed Illidan. New body, tons of power, the ability to go 'home' and take his rightful place amongst the Burning Legion. If it weren't for those meddling kids...

(I may have thought about this too much. I also may imagine Kael haunting Jaina, miserable and trying to tell her how sorry he is, but he can't because she has zero spirit-sense.)

This is like a total 180 to my head canon (the one where everyone sort of lives happily ever after! kinda) but I like that interpretation a lot. As bad end AUs go, it makes a scary amount of sense.

And it IS plausible considering Illidan got Gul'dan's memories in at least two cases that we know of. The way the Cipher of Damnation chain ended also takes on a scary kind of relevance in this scenario, because Gul'dan!Illidan would have the perfect setup to get Kael out of his hair (it also makes A'dal and the Sha'tar somewhat of a patsy, which is kinda interesting).

I mean this is pretty much the only way I could ever buy what went down in BC at face value.

And now I have this adorable yet really sad mental image of ghost!Kael doing little things like nudging Jaina's teacup out of the way of her elbow and turning out the lamp when she forgets to.

He probably does that for Rommath and Halduron and Lot'themar too.

"Where the hell's my pen--oh, there. Weird. o.o I thought I left it in the kitchen."
