Stay classy, AGA!
(Warning: this wank may require an immediate infusion of baby animals wearing people clothes. This is small but virulent. Thanks to the wank_report nonnys.)

Torchwood fans have been wondering why there hasn't been any news on a new season; theories ranged from the partnership between Starz and BBC falling through to writer to producer Russell T. Davies shifting his attention to a new series entirely. Even the actors didn't seem to know what was going on.

Yesterday the story broke about why the season has been delayed, and it's for one of the worst possible reasons: RTD's partner has been diagnosed with brain cancer and he's taking time off to take care of him.

The Anti-Gwen Alliance (you may remember them from such wanks as "let's wear character bashing shirts to a con the actress playing the character is attending!" (original post now gone; wank report here, pretty wanky on its own, partial screencap here, because the internet never forgets) handles the news with their usual grace and tact.

Some, um..."highlights:"

I'm sorry for the poor guy who has cancer (and the misfortune to love RTD) but this can't be the reason why Starz does not continue.

I feel for anyone in the other guys position, especially as he now appears to be having to be nursed by Toad of Toad Hall, but I feel NO sympathy, whatsoever, for RTD. He is clutching at straws- no-one has picked up on his god awful "cucumber" thing so he needs an excuse to get back over here and mess with our TV again. I just hope to god that the BBC has the sense to barricade the doors and pretend they aren't home when he calls.....

And once again somebody else gets blamed for RTDs fail. No fans to blame left Crusty? The terrible boyfriend needs to step in as the goat? That's low.

I'm going to go write some fluff now. Or look at puppies. Maybe write about my OTP playing with puppies.

I'd be willing to believe that the last thing on RTD's mind right now is how he's going to pay his fucking bills.

For him, sure. He probably has a ton of savings. Also, he and his partner live in the UK, and get medical care from the government. But the very first thing on the mind of a lot of people when they or their partner get sick is "how the fuck are we going to pay for this?"

I've been trying to get Medicaid for months to pay for surgery I need, so this is kind of at the top of my mind.

Oh Lord, I am so sorry to hear that. Australia's public health care is pretty shitty (I have to wait over a year to see a urologist through public care but I will eventually see one) but we have it pretty good comparatively. I know what it's like to need surgery and to not be able to get it when you need it. I can't imagine what it's like to need surgery but have no guarantee you'll ever get it. This is a totally OT message but I wanted to say that my thoughts are with you.

Thanks. I'm not nearly as badly off as a lot of people -- my condition isn't life-threatening, just very painful. (I guess I could extrapolate to the future and say it will decrease my lifespan, not just my quality of life, because I can't exercise, if I have to make that argument to get Medicaid.) Also, my parents can and will pay for the surgery if it comes to that, though they will have to put off retirement for significantly longer if I don't get reimbursed. And I have a great partner who takes care of everything for me, including a lot of the paperwork.

Anyway, this guy and his partner are worse off than my partner and I, because brain cancer is worse than my condition by a ton. They are "lucky" in the one respect that they have money and don't have to worry about paying for medical care, though. But I wouldn't want to trade places with them.

It's best not to compare situations. I learnt that early on with my chronic condition. Everyone has their own gig to take care of, and that's your own deal and it's important to you.

But yeah, I get what you mean about being lucky, though.

I'm very sorry. I should have been more clear that I was only making that statement because of that, that it's not just that RTD has had a successful career and can afford to take time off, but most of all that he's fortunate enough to live somewhere with free health care. Believe me, if he was a US citizen, I would certainly have qualified that more. As it was, I certainly shouldn't have sounded so dismissive of the crippling cost of medical care here, and I apologize. I'm sorry for erasing what you're going through, and I hope you succeed in getting Medicaid.
