they exist outside of the realm that most people are cognizant of.

Mentally ill people are just so deep, they're cognizant of so much more than regular people! And it doesn't hurt them at all, in fact it helps them and everyone else! Just like a real mental illness.

It sounds kind of like when people get all jealous of depressed people because of "depressive realism", not realizing how much it sucks to see things realistically and what a benefit it is to be a little off in your estimation of everything. If that was going to be an appropriate metaphor at all and not more disability magic, not noticing the monsters would be the perfect way to protect you from them.
