As much as it saddens me to say this, it works either way. Assholes sometimes use both replacements in the same sentence for added "comedy."
The romaji R is halfway between the English R and L sounds. Japanese speakers sometimes have trouble with the English R and L sounds, and then racist/xenophobic assholes act like assholes.
