Being offended about being offended. Loudly.
[info]fuckyeah makes a run of the mill post in fanficrants about the use of racist phonetic accents in a kink meme fic. Everyone nods and tsks appropriately...except for [info]bgaleb, for whom this is just the last straw. A stand must be taken. And that stand must be coated in more exclamation points than a porcupine's got needles.

I am outraged

I thought all day about all of this and decided to write an open letter to all the pests.

I am sick and tired of all the uneducated fuckheads who took it upon themselves to be offended on behalf of all humanity over a phonetic accent of all things. In that case you have to be offended by half of all classic European literature, you clot-poles!! I am sick and tired of always being politically correct, always being the "smart"one, always being polite and such. But in this case I just fucking can't be all of that!! If you're going to come here and criticize people anonymously, then you can just fuck off.

You choose to be offended by a fucking kink meme for crying out loud!! I don't care about your feelings! I am here to read fan-fiction for god's sake! And it doesn't matter how many people try to reassure the author, or your blubbering justifications, the damage is already done! Because of people like you we can't have nice things. No one wants to hear how offended you are on a kink meme. I am so outraged, I am almost speechless! This is my opinion, if you feel offended by it I do not care whatsoever, you stupid, narrow-minded self righteous fools!

Oh, by the way, if all of you critics are so sophisticated, why don't you go read James Joyce or Leo Tolstoy, not filthy porn on a kink meme then? If you're on a kink meme , you don't have the right to be offended. Hypocrites.

I wish I knew who Author!Anon is so I could console them with hugs and chocolate!

People attempt to explain why kink-acceptance does not mean racism-acceptance, but they are not having with it. The honor of the kink meme must be protected from people wishing to not be confronted by racial caricatures.

I am not here to discuss the law, but a kink meme IS a SPECIAL place indeed! Its is deliciously filthy and kinky and deviant and full of prohibited fantasies and explicit descriptions! If people willingly go there they should be prepared for anything, that's my point. Did you ever read about all the kinks in your daily newspaper? No? I thought not. But if you ever do, THEN you could be offended, because some of the stuff IS PROHIBITED BY LAW in some countries or states.

But we could write and read about it on the kink meme freely. I don't see you complaining about rape or underage fucking or drinking; don't you feel offended by it? So go educate yourself for crying out loud!

[info]bgaleb even posts the offending chunk of the fic so we can all see how unracist it is. It, um...it does not work as they planned. Undaunted, [info]bgaleb continues to yell about how little they care, and flounces eight or nine times in succession until finally the banhammer a voluntary unfriending of the community ends their piteous existence. And nothing of value was lost.

For bonus content and even more exclamation point overload, they go to wail in their journal about it. Something there got deleted, but I have caps should they decide to end the rest.

Phonetic accents always annoy me in writing, off-topicish.

I was always confused why Gambit and Rogue had the phonetic accents when the other english speakers didn't, until I realized it was because they were supposed to be stupid southies.

Disclaimer: the random cries of German and Russian have made it so I'm not actually sure if Nightcrawler and Piotr had the accents because the other 'adorable' verbal tics have devolved their dialogue into a lot of 'dosvadanya, liebchen!' in my memory.

I loathe phonetic Southern accents. I don't sound like that. My father and baby sister have accents so thick you could cut them with knives and even they don't sound like that.

Eventually, I left comics fandom and ended up in Transformers. And TF fandom does phonetic Southern accents (and...other accents), too. *headdesk*

Inferno is one of my favorite characters. And the way soooooo many authors butcher his (very, very slight) accent drives me batty.

Chamber from Generation X had a horrible cockney accent, Skin had a sort of Spanish/gangsta...thing, Husk tried to hide her southern accent, Colossus, sometimes Nightcrawler...

Wolvie has "A Canadian Accent", and apparently he was made Canadian to "See if they could write a Canadian Accent". I don't know about other Canadians but I know me and my actually pronounce the entirety of the word "of".

Doesn't Chamber communicate solely through telepathy? Or am I mixing up characters? And if he does, why does he have an accent? Is his telepathy harder to understand because he's not a Real 'MurikanTM?

Oh yes, particularly when they are of the generic "everyone from that country talks like this" kind, and paired with random interjections in the native language, usually of very simple words. When I'm speaking or writing English, I may not always remember the words for difficult concepts, but I can manage "yes" and "no" and won't randomly start saying "ja" und "nein".

[Brought to you by the society for "Frau author, we don't all sound like ze Nazis from ze World War II movies, nein!"

To be fair, the 'und' was between the 'ja' und the 'nein' and I probably would have done the same thing despite my being profoundly whitebread American (with five years studying German in high school and college).

I definitely didn't notice until you pointed it out.

Absolutely. I'm more likely to describe a word I'm not knowing than use a German word. Why would I use a German word? Germanisms usually are more grammatical things than just randomly using Fräulein or something silly like that.

But then all germans are always angry nazis, so what do I know. *angrily barks orders at a random passerby*

ANECDOTE: I was playing city of heroes with my german friend and he'd invited other people to our team because he always forgets that he has the worst luck with that, and he started speaking german to my character as a joke, right?

So this douchebag on the team starts yelling at him to 'stop speaking nazi'

Oh God, "Fräulein". If you want to be really amazed, read the English Wiki talk page from that article, where one heroic (non-German) person is valiantly defending the way things should be among educated and well-mannered people against feminist activists like the Duden. (Completely OT, but I occasionally re-read that one and wonder what could possibly possess someone to go on such a crusade on an issue that does not even directly affect them, complete with possible sock-puppets and definitely invented experiences.)

[info]lied_ohne_worte

Well, they want words the readers might recognise so that the "exoticism" shows only the speakers but not the readers as linguistically inept, I suppose. Not much sense to have a German character say "Erkenntnistheorie" or "Weihnachtsbaumdekoration"...

(Never try using JF from your phone, you'll accidentally freeze a whole row of comments)

Interjection of random Foreignese into otherwise English dialogue always bugs me. Things like 'yes' and 'no' are the first words one learns when learning a foreign language, so those would be the last ones you'd forget.

I know some people do it to a certain extent, but I suspect it's usually deliberate. See: my boyfriend shouting "oui!" from the other room the first time I went back to his place and, inspecting his bookshelf, I exclaimed "OMG you have all of Fables!!!"

Fables and Doctor Who. This is how he got me.

Other than small touches of them, yeah, they tend to be hard to read. It's ruined more than one Star Trek fic for me, reading painfully phonetic Chekov and/or Scotty.

99.9% of the time I absolutely loath them and would never ever use them myself, except for when it comes to fic for the game Chrono Cross where all of a sudden I run into this weird mental stutter. If you get to the game's developer room you'll run into one of the writers bragging about the script he made to make sure every character got their own unique voice.

And, dumbest thing in the world, every time I write something featuring one of the characters with a phonetic accent in game my mind goes 'That guy was so proud of those stupid accents! *guiltguiltguilt*' at me until I give in and write it out, even though I know how ridiculous I'm being.
