Being offended about being offended. Loudly.
[info]fuckyeah makes a run of the mill post in fanficrants about the use of racist phonetic accents in a kink meme fic. Everyone nods and tsks appropriately...except for [info]bgaleb, for whom this is just the last straw. A stand must be taken. And that stand must be coated in more exclamation points than a porcupine's got needles.

I am outraged

I thought all day about all of this and decided to write an open letter to all the pests.

I am sick and tired of all the uneducated fuckheads who took it upon themselves to be offended on behalf of all humanity over a phonetic accent of all things. In that case you have to be offended by half of all classic European literature, you clot-poles!! I am sick and tired of always being politically correct, always being the "smart"one, always being polite and such. But in this case I just fucking can't be all of that!! If you're going to come here and criticize people anonymously, then you can just fuck off.

You choose to be offended by a fucking kink meme for crying out loud!! I don't care about your feelings! I am here to read fan-fiction for god's sake! And it doesn't matter how many people try to reassure the author, or your blubbering justifications, the damage is already done! Because of people like you we can't have nice things. No one wants to hear how offended you are on a kink meme. I am so outraged, I am almost speechless! This is my opinion, if you feel offended by it I do not care whatsoever, you stupid, narrow-minded self righteous fools!

Oh, by the way, if all of you critics are so sophisticated, why don't you go read James Joyce or Leo Tolstoy, not filthy porn on a kink meme then? If you're on a kink meme , you don't have the right to be offended. Hypocrites.

I wish I knew who Author!Anon is so I could console them with hugs and chocolate!

People attempt to explain why kink-acceptance does not mean racism-acceptance, but they are not having with it. The honor of the kink meme must be protected from people wishing to not be confronted by racial caricatures.

I am not here to discuss the law, but a kink meme IS a SPECIAL place indeed! Its is deliciously filthy and kinky and deviant and full of prohibited fantasies and explicit descriptions! If people willingly go there they should be prepared for anything, that's my point. Did you ever read about all the kinks in your daily newspaper? No? I thought not. But if you ever do, THEN you could be offended, because some of the stuff IS PROHIBITED BY LAW in some countries or states.

But we could write and read about it on the kink meme freely. I don't see you complaining about rape or underage fucking or drinking; don't you feel offended by it? So go educate yourself for crying out loud!

[info]bgaleb even posts the offending chunk of the fic so we can all see how unracist it is. It, um...it does not work as they planned. Undaunted, [info]bgaleb continues to yell about how little they care, and flounces eight or nine times in succession until finally the banhammer a voluntary unfriending of the community ends their piteous existence. And nothing of value was lost.

For bonus content and even more exclamation point overload, they go to wail in their journal about it. Something there got deleted, but I have caps should they decide to end the rest.

Absolutely. I'm more likely to describe a word I'm not knowing than use a German word. Why would I use a German word? Germanisms usually are more grammatical things than just randomly using Fräulein or something silly like that.

But then all germans are always angry nazis, so what do I know. *angrily barks orders at a random passerby*

ANECDOTE: I was playing city of heroes with my german friend and he'd invited other people to our team because he always forgets that he has the worst luck with that, and he started speaking german to my character as a joke, right?

So this douchebag on the team starts yelling at him to 'stop speaking nazi'

Heh yes, that's why I tend to be careful with revealing my nationality in English-language online settings where I don't have a good feeling of the general maturity of the population. Luckily I can mostly pass as a native English speaker in writing. Same when I am in foreign countries - I'm glad that I have mostly a "huh, I wonder where she could be from" kind of accent.

Honestly, I was just so embarrassed on behalf of North America right then, since that guy was obviously either Canadian or American. All I wanted to do was an Addams Family Morticia/Gomez thing. 'Oh, Dr. Bernie! You're speaking German!' and instead we got a jackass.

Your having to be careful isn't making me less embarrassed.

Meh, one encounters plenty or stupid and/or racist German people online, too, who make me very embarrassed. Youtube and online newspaper comments are their preferred habitats. They just aren't noticed by other people that much because they don't tend to move in areas that are in other languages than German.

For me it's generally the Kölner Stadtanzeiger. "Why don't you tell us the nationality of the person who committed this crime? [never asked when it was a German, funnily] ZOMG the justice system is just far too soft on criminals! What a pity we don't have the death penalty! The Muslims are going to turn this into a Sharia state!" (they manage to apply those to any article, no matter what it's about). The sad thing is that it's perhaps ten people doing that on a regular basis, but you just cannot discuss anything with them.

I just throw my hands up at them. You cannot ever get through them, and they just keep posting everywere. I don't even get the point. They aren't convincing people with this, it's just being terrible to be terrible.

ZOMG the justice system is just far too soft on criminals!

Of course, the same people will argue that disagreement with them is harsh government oppression.
Quite the disconnect.

I felt randomly special that we're ~mature~ enough to know this, and then went "that's not really the point" but wanted to share anyway.

When it comes to state accents, I definitely have Ohio. My cousins mock our habit of drawing things out (...How do I even explain that, it's a vowel thing that is just very here-ish.)

Oh God, "Fräulein". If you want to be really amazed, read the English Wiki talk page from that article, where one heroic (non-German) person is valiantly defending the way things should be among educated and well-mannered people against feminist activists like the Duden. (Completely OT, but I occasionally re-read that one and wonder what could possibly possess someone to go on such a crusade on an issue that does not even directly affect them, complete with possible sock-puppets and definitely invented experiences.)

If you heard a noise, that was me facepalming. This anonymous person sure thinks its VERY important to add wrong info to wikipedia.

Damn those evil feminist crusaders like the Duden, the bastion of feminist evil!

My favourite part is where they talk about how inappropriate it would be for them to be addressed as "Fräu". My fingers are twitching to go in there and shout "Yes, I would object to that too, because it's not even a German word!" Way to disprove one's whole supposed decades-long experience.

I didn't even spot that ä during the first reading of the talk page. Wow.

Just the thought of the word "Fräulein" gives me the hives. I am well over 18 years, and my marital status is nobody's business, thank you very much. And no, using it after I said it angers me isn't funny, either. Gah!
