No proper way to make a witty headline about this I thought about posting this to FandomWank, but in no way is this funny, so this seems like the more appropriate location. So I am sure that everyone here is aware of the tragedy that occured down in Tucson on Saturday. If anyone needs a refresher, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tucson_shooting , but essentially, we had some dude in Tucson decide to shoot into a crowd, killing 6 people and injuring several others, including shooting Congresswoman Giffords who was shot in the head. Horrible. Really no other words for it. But Travis Corcoran, from online comic shop Heavy Ink, seems to have a different spin on it. http://tjic.com/?p=19638Yup, according to him, the shame is that the gun-man didn't have better aim. Some people even support his position, because of course all is fair in ridding yourself of a Communist-politician...or something like that. So this being the interwebs, of course this gets out. I mean, he posted it intentionally to get out. "@tjic, you have my pity. May you grow a soul someday, because you are desperately in need of one." -- Gail Simone. "I'd like to ask that you... @ & your store @ stop carrying my creator-owned work. I respect your right to an opinion, but am not personally comfortable doing business with someone who advocates violence against people they disagree with. I certainly have no power to speak for my publishers and employers, but as an individual creator, I hope you'll respect this request." -- Nick Spencer "I can't stop someone selling my books, but please don't buy them from Heavy Ink." -- Paul Cornell more of the story can be found here http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/01/10/heavy-ink-arizona-shooting-corcoran/?a_dgi=aolshare_facebook and http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/01/unacceptable-online-retailer-draws-reactions-over-giffords-comments/ and some feedback at http://www.bleedingcool.com/forums/showthread.php?33148-Comics-Retailer-Causes-Internet-Storm-Over-Gabrielle-Giffords-Gun-Attack
There is an odd post which seems like it is referring to a manefesto of his beliefs, but actually it appears to be a bit of back-pedalling in responce to the whole outrage http://tjic.com/?p=19751 . His answer on "step 5" is interesting in being both unapologetic and weasely at the same time.
I am waiting to see what happens next... Current Mood: OMGWTF | | 8:16p |
The sequel to the latest Snapewank Remember the latest Snapewank? In the wake of it sylvanawood came to ravenstar84's LJ and made really special comments: ( Read more )If you want to know what "well-written fanfic" sylvanawood is talking about, look at those links: A bucketful of SnapewankHarmonian wank with a Snapewank chaser. ravenstar84 pointed out that the comments made by mary_j_59 and totalreadr were problematic. sylvanawood agreed that totalreadr's comment crossed the line and posted an apology, but an imperfect one: sylvanawood
The post from which the following quote originates, has been removed because it is offensive. But since I don't like for difficult topics to be swept under the carpet, I've been opening this thread.
I remind you that this community is for a discussion of books and fictional characters. It's not about discussing general principles. In this case, though, I feel that an exception needs to be made. Discussions always will have 'real world' elements, but they should be kept to a minimum. In this case things went too far.
totalreadr wrote: Oh, I dunno. The whole reason I couldn't get up much sympathy for Emmett Till over on terri's lj was because he was popular and "acting macho." In my reading on the case I even found his family quoted as expressing that his death was *especially* tragic because he *was* so popular! For me their cris de coeur Did Not Work As Intended in the same way that Gerda Weissman Klein's /All But My Life/ did not (http://raisin-gal.livejournal.com/1539.html. (Primo Levi's work OTOH...but I digress.)
Emmett Till was popular, macho, had a bright future, etc....up north. Down south, none of that mattered because he was still black.
This is, indeed, a horrible thing to say, and for once I have to agree with the trolls who come here and shout their protest. Why is no one of the regulars protesting this? Do I have to open up the community for anonymous users to protest stuff like that? I'm trying to protect you guys and give you a niche, but that doesn't mean that stuff like this can just stand.
Racism can, perhaps, be debated in an academical manner when it is about fictional characters. This is about a real, horrible lynch murder. This is crossing the line.
Here's the link from ravenstar84 again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmett_Till
Yes, I know, like others who hang out on her journal she's one of the wank trolls. But sometimes the trolls are right.
Comments here are open and remain so, and for once, I won't screen out the anonymous posts. Perhaps you can clarify this with a minimum of civility. sylvanawood refused to admit that the comment made by mary_j_59 was offensive and the faily conversation with ravenstar84 ensued: ( Read more ) sylvanawood's comment about sailorlum's plea is a thing of beauty, too. |
