In fairness, I was concerned about the decision to cast POC actors in those roles because I, personally, read those roles in the novels as being of the "exotic/savage/decadent" archetype, and wasn't entirely comfortable with POC being notably cast in roles that fulfilled that archetype and notably not cast in Westerosi/protagonist roles. However, so far I've really liked how they've handled Qarth, and I didn't detect any of the "exotic savage decadent race" that I perceived in the novel. Decadent, yes, but in the same way that Westerosi politics are decadent, not in a "wow them brown people sure are exceptionally threatening to our pure-blooded white female protagonist" way, if that makes sense. And I also suspect that her reasons for side-eyeing the casting decisions and my reasons are worlds apart. Post a comment in response: |
