Kickstarter Project vs Gamers, or: Why don't you think about the MEN?!
Tropes vs Women in Video Games is a project by a single woman to look at and analyze several tropes and stereotypes in gaming that concerns female characters. Sounds like a reasonable project, right?

Apparently, the internet doesn't seem to agree.

This goes as well as you think.

Major trigger warnings for each link. Don't wade through comments, as usual.

Holy crap. I heard about this before and I figured it must be bad but that's some really horrific shit.

People keep asking, well, why do you have to make such a big deal that you're a woman gamer, well, maybe it's because of stuff like this.

(I'm not expressing myself really well right now.)

I don't blame you.

The latest idiocy I'm reading now is all the asshats who think questioning the legitimacy of the $120k donated somehow makes them right. They're all making up stories about how she's lololol buying a car and how dare people in a free society give their money to someone else and on and on and on, including making up farcical excuses for why it doesn't cost $6k to make a series of videos like she wants to make.

(and I bet these are the same jackasses who would throw a shitfit if anyone questioned why they spent $10 on NASCAR or something like that.)

(-_-)

Agreed - it's a thing on blogs to have a donate button to give someone coffee money because you've enjoyed their work - how is this any different? I'd give her money just because I appreciate that in discussing these issues she's exposed herself to vile morons and think she deserves to buy herself something pretty.

she deserves to buy herself something pretty
or, perhaps more realisitically, deserves to pay off some debts she's probably accrued because society tells her she needs to look and behave a certain way (not to mention if she's a college graduate, she might have astronomical school debts to worry about) even if she can't financially sustain it because she has the gall to have a vagina and expects to be treated equally amongst the penis-owning workforce, and god knows these vigilante woman-haters wouldn't think twice about stooping so low as to find out where she works and somehow get her fired too....

....
sorry, I've just been reading "STFU, Conservatives" over on tumblr, so I'm a bit fired up as it is. But ugh, male privilege is disgusting.

I imagine a lot of people realize that their money might not go directly into making episodes, especially once they greatly passed the minimum amount. I mean, really, is anybody saying, "Well, she's already gotten more than most people make in two years, but I'm every dollar is going into making 15 minute videos for the Internet!" Naw, most people are donating to make a point to the assholes, and to support someone they respect (and for the higher amounts, to basically buy the downloads/dvds/etc). If she buys a car, then she's kinda just proving that you can turn internet notoriety into a livelihood sometimes.

Plus, most of these video series require the makers spending a lot of their own money to create, even if they get donations/funding. And if you're spending your own money to make free entertainment/education for someone else, then you're probably going to respectful with the donations.

Er, sorry for the tl;dr, apparently that really pissed me off.

I think she was planning to use the money to buy a wide variety of games and gaming systems to ensure she had looked at a broad group before doing the videos, so in yet another irony she started a Kickstarter to ensure she was being more "fair" and now is getting attacked for wanting the money to try and cover more ground. Oy.

(Irony must be about to be hospitalized for exhaustion after this past week)
