Kickstarter Project vs Gamers, or: Why don't you think about the MEN?!
Tropes vs Women in Video Games is a project by a single woman to look at and analyze several tropes and stereotypes in gaming that concerns female characters. Sounds like a reasonable project, right?

Apparently, the internet doesn't seem to agree.

This goes as well as you think.

Major trigger warnings for each link. Don't wade through comments, as usual.

Oh dear.

I just cannot comprehend how all those men can fail to see the enormous irony involved in telling a woman that she is wrong about pointing out sexism... by being infinitely more sexist than the material she was researching in the first place.

All of this just makes me glad that the only online games I've ever even tried out are LOTRO and Glitch, both of which appear to be quite different from what I hear about, say, WoW. I can't imagine playing for fun and relaxation in an environment where people like that are tolerated.

I left WoW, but it was never nearly this bad, though it was always in the lower half of MMOs when it came to assholishness. (Guild Wars is the worst I've seen, and oh boy, it was bad.) You can choose with whom to play, silence channels, etc. That said: one of the reasons I left WoW is that it's gotten a lot worse in recent years, socially, than it used to be. When I started to play, I could be in general chat, and pretty much count on the most annoying thing there being Chuck Norris jokes. By the time I left, I couldn't be in any chat that wasn't private, not even trade.

I always avoid youtube comments because there is nearly always something horrifically bad in them. I saw people throwing racist, homophobic, misogynist, and I don't even know what slurs on a Debussy flute piece playing over a nice picture.

O_O

Wow. I can't decide if people on Youtube really like being assholes, or if there's just someting about women doing anything besides the "LOL make me a sammich in the kitchen" acceptable behavior that triggers the wig-out-like-a-batshit-crazycakes impulse in these people.

Either way? My faith in humanity isn't that great at the moment. :(

On an extremely cute JRPG video someone linked in fandom_lounge, someone said basically, "I hope they translate this into English and bring it to the U.S."

Response: "Learn Japanese, you *misogynist slur*"

I have no idea what inspires these people. I only hope they remain glued to their computers and never inflict themselves on people or animals or plants in real life.

Having a monthly subscription fee seems to really help to weed out most of the assholes, at least for MMOs, doesn't it? Especially in the beginning, when most gamers were really against monthly fees, most of the WoW players were older, more mature, and a bit more serious when it came to the interactive parts of gaming.

I...don't think it does. In my WoW time, I faced such gems as "I wish the nazis had wiped your kind out" in raidchat.

Yes, he was indeed refering to the holocaust and gay people, was completely serious, and was surprised when a few people complained.

These people exist in masses in WoW as well, they just tend to get moderated quicker.

I meant that there generally seems to be a lower concentration. It did get progressively worse as I kept playing, though, and I started in BC.

Youtube comments are virtually always a giant mess. I saw people get in a huge wanky argument over a video of weather. Also I saw opera fans flinging insults over who played a certain role the best. I don't mean I thought opera fans were better people than anyone else, but it was still kind of surprising to me somehow.

I have yet to find a YouTube video of the song "Istanbul (Not Constantinople") whose comments don't veer into Greco-Turkish who-hit-whom-back-first wank.
