Stalking jackassery! The cure for bullying
Hello, everyone.

There's a site called Goodreads which is a bit like a library, a book review service, and fountain of wank.

This particular sordid tale starts out like promising wank, until the instigators fall off the deep end of wanky into the depths of the pool of 'you are all horrible assholes'.

Summary: Getting a bad review on Goodreads is like being bullied, so the solution these poor beleagured bullying victims come up with is simple: Stalk and terrorize anyone who leaves them a bad review under the guise of 'stopping bullying'.

Here's the links:

Summary of the situation as well as the history which is much more indepth and accurate than what I just said.

Link collection

One of the 'Anti-Bullies' bullying victims. As a reminder, this is all triggered by giving a book a bad review.

QUOTE:

This week, shortly after writing a status update about feeling stalked, I received a call. A woman said, "We can find you, bitch" and then hung up.

Excellent response from one of the targets (see the first link) where she reveals her part pirate heritage and great parenting tips.

Anyway, so that's what's happening in professional publishing this week.

I'm sorry if this loses coherency in parts, I haven't eaten for twelve hours and there's a carpet of slippery comicbooks between me and the fridge. I have to clean, organize, and write down issues before I can eat.

This will be my last known post.

Wait, what? Stalking people for writing book reviews? Look, people, they didn't punch your baby in the face. They just said they weren't interested in your book.

Ooh, yeah. The butthurt about not-so-positive reviews has been strong for ages with authors, I guess we all know that? and now it's escalated.

I'm going to be smug for a moment and say this is one of the reasons I love LibraryThing so much (it's not so popular with the masses, because there's a steeper learning curve or something, plus not being intimately linked to FB? and also fairly strict rules about what authors can and can't do as authors on the site), but these authors still have no business doing this nonsense, and it's appalling.

TBH when I first saw the "GoodReads Bullies" website name, I assumed it was made by readers about author bullies, and not what it actually is, because author-bullies are such a problem these days!

It is (not that) surprisingly common for authors to get "book" and "baby" confused.

I was getting really worked up about these douchebags, but then someone posted in the comments of second-last link that the identity and personal info of the individual behind the site is easily available. Now I'm both worried things are going to get really out of control, and hoping that they don't and there's some internet justice a la Burger King lettuce guy.

Off-topic, but so they did find out who that was? I just read that story on a local news website and was really, really grossed out.

SBTB talked about it too, and there's a name-calling fight between someone called Ann Somerville and someone else, plus some 'so can I never respond to my reviewers EVER?' from another commenter named... Kathy?

*digs up link*

Here.

That's Ann Somerville who used to be Tritorella and is now writing original slash.

She used to have her stories up for free on her site but then took the free copies down in favor of ebooks for sale. The quality wasn't bad, and I reviewed them (while they were still free) on my fanfic recommendation site a few years ago, saying (paraphrased) that they were entertaining but that I found the central conflict* unbelievably rose-tinted. She showed up to defend it -- politely, but strongly.

* Lest anyone go "lol she thought a slash story was unrealistic," she seemed to be wanting to write a serious story about war to go along with the romance plot.

I had wondered if this would make its way here. There has been a huge run of 'writer throws fit because of a bad review' stories circulating lately in the writing communities I frequent. You would think they would learn that being an asshole on the internet will not generate sales.

While reading through the links, I said to myself, "Hawkins has been mighty quiet of late. Has she been up to anything?" and discovered that she's posting MY real name around the Internet.

Le sigh.

We're living through some sort of grand galactic syzygy of butthurt, I tell you.

I do not understand some authors. You wrote a book. You re-wrote it and edited it over and over (hopefully) and now it is done. If people are actually paying you for it, you lucked out. Some people are going to hate it. Some people will hopefully love it. But it's done. No take-backs. Let it rise or fall on its own. Move on.

When you are stalking and threatening people because they didn't like your goddamn book, you need to seriously re-evaluate what you think is important in the world. If you come up with, "my book is more important than other people's safety and well-being," I hope you never make one cent from writing anything again.

I wonder if the victims of these loons have any legal recourse? By publishing names and other personally identifying information, it seems like they might be in violation of some laws. If there aren't laws against this sort of thing, there certainly should be!

Also, on your first link you wrote: "they’re naturally going to be loathe to police the tone of such conversations too heavily..." That should be "loath to police...etc" That's such an easy typo to make though. I know my fingers often spell a homophone when I'm thinking of the other one. IDK, guess it's muscle memory.

And what do you know. At Dear Author, W*ll Sh*tt*rly shows up to make it all. about. him and how he's being unfairly maligned, because there's one sentence in there about his outing of CoffeeandInk. Repeating the same arguments all over again and again and again.

At this rate he'll still be at it in 2026.
