I don't see a problem with that, if it's handled well. (Which obviously it's not, because this author obviously can't handle anything well, or even halfway competently.) This is a dystopia, after all -- it's supposed to be terrible. But considering everything else in the books, I'm guessing seiberwing's opinion about why the author put that in there is correct.
