I think Marjorie Black* did a pretty good job in Noughts and Crosses. It wasn't a Farnham's Freehold situation, but it just switched the positions quite quietly.

*I read it a while ago, so could have missed/forgotten anything bad. But from memory it was a good story and thoughtful concept.
