Oscars Unfunny
Double header! I may engage in some hyperbole in the following paraphrases, but I've also had like, five cups of coffee. Please bear with me.

First Unfunny: Seth MacFarlane.

Second Unfunny: Onion makes joke that not only falls flat, but takes out several bystanders and kills a kitten on the way down. The premise was, they called nine year old Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis a cunt. The joke was that no one would ever say such a thing about her. Except, in fact, people were saying that shit about her, and say that shit to little nine year old black girls all the time*. Link is Laura Hudson's explanation and commentary on the matter.

The Onion has apologized (that's the tumblr apology, I'm not linking to the facebook one because the comments hurt my soul even more), which moves us to phase 2 of the problem, where there are now people in the comments and elsewhere shaming the Onion for apologizing for insulting a nine year old girl.

Here's one where because his friends are dicks to each other, it's okay to dehumanize a nine year old girl. Other arguments include the assumption that all jokes are sacred, comedians never fuck up, and somehow it's a personal affront when someone else apologizes for hurting someone. Also humour is dead forever because they apologized. No links to those ones, those are in the comments and you can't make me go in there to paste.

You can't.

Speaking of comments, even positive posts about Quvenzhane were filled with nastiness in the comments.

Also for some reason some people think a nine year old girl should not have had a purse shaped like a dog.

I'm going to repeat nine year old girl some more.

Sidefail: The visual effects community sees red in the wake of Oscar protest and on-air snub. They didn't pay a VFX house, people are out of work, and when a guy tried to talk about it at the Oscars they cut the mic.

*Do not take my emphasis on the youth of Quvenzhane Wallis to in any way mean I consider that appropriate to call anyone of any age. I just feel so bad for her. People wouldn't call her by her name in the interviews, MacFarlane made a sex joke about her, and etc, etc, etc.

............

You know, I was wondering if I should try to find a video file of the Oscars to see the skit the Avengers actors did when they presented the best cinematography award. This just killed that thought.

It looks like the Onion tried parodying Seth MacFarlane and failed horribly. :O

Also, what is with the hate for a child, anyway? :( Just because she has a name which looks unpronounceable (dur, did anyone ASK HER FIRST so Seth-the-douchebag could say it properly?) doesn't mean people have a right to treat her like crap.

No one can ever go lower than Seth MacFarlane. Parodying him by trying to be more misogynist than him is like parodying Rush Limbaugh by trying to be more misogynist than him.

What would have been funny is if they wrote an article in which they pretended Seth MacFarlane said anything that made it look like he thought women were human beings.

Just a thought: "Miss Wallis" would've been a reasonably safe (and courteous) option.

It's not even that unpronounceable. It's pretty phonetic. Qu-ven-zha-nay. (The e has an accent letting one know how to pronounce it.) I feel like people aren't even trying.

If you haven't seen the movie, you totally should - because she was also acting her damn little heart out when she was only five. (I knew she probably wasn't going to win for Oscar Politics reasons, but I secretly was hoping people would realize "okay, fuck the usual Oscar politics shit, this kid ROCKED HARDCORE".)

And she was still enough of a kid that when they showed the clip of her when they were announcing the nominees, rather than just sitting there smiling sweetly, she was flexing her arms all "yay that's me I rock".

That is a gorgeous dress - and even better (at least to my way of thinking) is the dress appropriate for a nine year old child. She is not trying to look like she is older then she is. And that is a good thing.

The purse in a little over the top - but hey it's Hollywood on Oscar night. Over the top is the norm.

Also: John Travolta presenting. The Academy loves supporting men who commit sexual assault.

Also for some reason some people think a nine year old girl should not have had a purse shaped like a dog.

Not looking at the comments. I think everyone should have a purse shaped like an animal or plant or etc. Because purses are incredibly boring.

As the article says, I understand what they were trying, but they did it the wrong way. At least the Onion recognizes it and apologized and vowed to learn from it, which is really more than I can say for commenters on both sides.

Did you mean to have anything after "Seth McFarlane"? I know he's king of the douchebags, but I wanted to know what he did here, specifically. The first linked article had a link to 9 sexist things that happened at the Oscars, for anyone else who wants to know how bad it got. I can't believe... no, I can believe it, it just outrages me, that the "I saw your boobs" song was allowed to go forward. Every woman they showed justly looked angry and humiliated.

And JFC that poor kid. Loved seeing T&Lo give her a "baby WERQ", and now I really want to see her movie.

She can use whatever she wants for a purse. Who cares? That person is just looking for something to hate on her about.

I thought Quevenzhane was gorgeous at the Oscars. Very age appropriate dressed at all her red carpet appearances, very well behaved for a 9yr old. She was polite even to those who spoke 'down' to her. Part of me wanted her to win, but the Academy may've nominated her but there was no way she was winning at such a young age. I DO think she will have a career in the future and will be there again. I was flabbergasted to see the Onion tweet. And well Seth MacFarlane is a DOUCHE. Some of it was funny but alot of it was not.

As for the person criticising her puppy purse? Get a life! It was adorable.

Also for some reason some people think a nine year old girl should not have had a purse shaped like a dog.

When I was a kid (ie, the eighties), there was an entire massive industry for backpacks and little girls purses in animal form. I know this because I was in fourth grade, his name was Rococo, and he was a racoon backpack. A very small backpack that could hold one (1) book and all my pencils, but his arms wrapped around my shoulders and I felt his love all day.

I know that is beside the point, but that is the most random thing I have read like, ever. Especially considering the Etsy frog-purse, made from a real, whole frog, mouth as opening. Which thanks to this post, will re-invade my nightmares tonight. Goddammit.

I hate the fact that it's literally impossible for me to go anywhere on the internet without running into someone complaining that MacFarlene bombed because people are "too easily offended". Yes, I'm sure my old classmate who was hospitalized for anorexia is only writing angrily about MacFarlene's eating disorder joke on Facebook because she's "too easily offended", not because she recognizes harmful rhetoric that has very real consequences or anything.

And I'm twenty-five this year.

Fuck the haters, that is an excellent bag.
