ETA: On a similar note, here's a column from ThinkProgress: "An Ethical Guide to Consuming Content Created by Awful People Like Orson Scott Card."

Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.

That sentence contains a few impressive levels of fail.

we so often forget that homosexuals were invented in 1985.

Also, marriage is a political issue, and a century in the future we won't have to worry about The Gays anymore.

I'm a little concerned about what he thinks will happen to the gays.

His publicly-stated position is that gay people should mostly be allowed to exist as long as we stay in the closet, though there should also be the occasional public trial and imprisonment to keep us in our place. And he considers this an enlightened, magnanimous, and tolerant position.

In addition, he's on the board for NOM, which is partially responsible for the kill-the-gays bill in Uganda.

He wants everyone to be exactly like him. And when people say, "no, we don't want to be exactly like you," he does not react well.

(I don't think every homophobe is in the closet. Orson Scott Card, however...)

There's one very specific subset of heterosexual-supremacists that I do tend to suspect may be closeted and self-loathing; the type that present heterosexuality as a noble sacrifice in which people refrain from engaging in same-sex relationships (which are obviously more satisfying) out of an altruistic desire to perpetuate the species and maintain social order. Because none of the actual heterosexuals I know experience their orientation as a sacrifice. And OSC is probably the most blatant user of the "noble sacrifice" explanation.

Oh, and let's not forget that possible future social developments are none of science fiction's damn business.

I know, right? It's not like any pre-1984 sci-fi works even attempted to show a society that had developed in issues like, say, racial or gender equality!

That'd be preposterous!

And, of course, things that happened 100 years ago don't have any impact whatsoever on what's going on today. And trying to extrapolate the future from the present doesn't have anything to do with science fiction at all, and speculative fiction in general doesn't have a thing to say about the world of today. Current political issues never ever seep into a writer's work even unintentionally.

Basically, OSC just said he wrote Ender's Game as a pure meaningless fantasy detached from anything and everything important to any human being alive now in the slightest. So, why are we supposed to care about it again?

I was hinging my wisecrack upon the fact that the original publication date happens to coincide with the title of a rather famous SF sociological cautionary tale, but...holy crap, you may be onto something.

IT WAS TRES AMUSANT. But I got totally distracted with 'wait, bugger means--' which I remember catching me by surprise when I was reading about the book about a year ago but can't remember if I asked anyone about it then.
