Inception unfunny racewank
Shamelessly copied from [info]wank_report. You can see the mice discuss it here.

[info]halflinen writes a pretty long Inception fanfic.

[info]the_moonmoth finds an exchange in the fic racist and problematic.

[info]godofwine disagrees.

[info]bookshop decides to school [info]godofwine on racism, telling [info]godofwine that "you may have the privilege of not being harmed or offended by images of racism in fandom that someone else of minority status *does not have*" and further explains that she's coming from "that cultural context of having experienced/witnessed Racefail."

[info]godofwine is an Asian living in the US.

fail_fandom anon has a lot of fun.

So does rivier: If a POC doesn't find it racist, it's internalized racism! POC anon lays the smackdown on her: "It's really amusing to watch white folks tell us non-white folks what we can and cannot think, what is an is not acceptable, what is and is not racist."

Godofwine is wrong in implying that hipster racism doesn't exist. Hipster racism is alive and well, and really, really obnoxious, although I'm not sure the snippet actually exemplifies it. My hipster racist relative likes to use the N-word "ironically", but it's really racist because he has no idea why the N-word is actually bad, and no idea of the appropriate context. . .and because he's racist in a boatload of other ways.

The rest of what she says makes a lot of sense, although I'm really uncomfortable with telling people they can't be 100% sure of calling something racist--we can debate where the line should be drawn over giving people the benefit of the doubt, but if someone thinks something is really racist, they should be allowed to be upset about being told to agree to disagree. That shit comes up all the time when people validly call out bigotry, and people should be able to be annoyed by it and express their annoyance.

:sits on hands: Just ignore me, I fail at both reading and making my point.

David from Six Feet Under was a good example of a character who was both kinda racist and likable, without making it look like his racism was okay. People need to stop acting like it's impossible.
