Hetalia: Not like Star Wars.
[info]yuletide is the community for a huge annual fic exchange that works like a Secret Santa. The focus is on obscure fandoms, and for many years the mods have had the final say on what is and is not eligible. While working out some kinks in a brand new automated system, they posted a non-final list of the fandoms nominated that were eligible for this year. Now, there's a whole ton of wank about that, but I'm focusing on a specific complaint. One that dips its toes in the realms of unfunny.

[info]vom_marlowe is very unhappy with Hetalia being on the eligible list. Not just because it's popular, but because "Third, Hetalia is the fandom where a bunch of fans stood in public at a convention this April and sieg heiled Hitler. It made the news.

This is not like having Star Wars accidentally added. The fans sieg heiled Hitler. Yes, I find the addition of Hetalia particularly upsetting."

Nevermind that what members of a fandom have done has no bearing on its Yuletide eligibility.

ETA: A mod has frozen [info]vom_marlowe's thread.

Also, is it just me, or is Hetilia's fandom/anti-fandom wankier then the politics tab on Fark? Because wow, just about all I hear from them is wank.

See, now I wanna Yuletide it just so that someone can request the crossover with The Producers. Or Hogan's Heroes!

I would read a fic with the plot of The Producers (as an au of almost any fandom, really) where the play they put on is obviously Hetalia. Done right, I suspect it could be really funny.

Is there anything on any tab on Fark that doesn't eventually (or very rapidly, as the case usually is) devolve into a cesspool of wank?

I sort of wandered into a race thread earlier today and got into a flamewar over AAVE. By flamewar I mean I posted twice and then made myself go outside. (Although I'm still pissed off because it's not going to stop being a fully fledged dialect with an internally consistent phonology and syntax just because you don't like brown people, you morons. /vent)

Every once in a while there are awesome threads ('it's a street light' being a classic example), and the Friday mugshot round up is generally lots of fun, but there is a lot of wank. It helps to keep your ignore list updated because a lot of the trolls are the sort that happily troll /b/ and aren't afraid to use racism as a weapon in their war on decency. The politics tab is especially bad.

The geek threads are usually entertaining and informative.

Everything I Know About Hetalia, I Know From FW, but it does kinda make sense when you think about it — it's basically made for crossing the streams of (international!) Politics Wank (pre-Godwinned for your convenience!) and Fandom Wank.

I didn't nominate anything, because I just didn't organize myself early enough this year.

But a couple of fandoms I would have nominated did make it, so I can't complain.

I'm sorry to hear about Discworld though, and I don't blame you for being disappointed. Seems like having Disworld fic is a Yuletide tradition.

I got the Notion into my head and eagerly waited by the comm for my first chance to nom, myself. I've never done it before, so I figured...

I sent an email pleaing for discworld, went to look at my list of noms, realized it wasn't on there, and sent an embarrassed 'um, apparently I never actually nominated it...'

It's been one of those mornings.

It turns out, though, all the fandoms I *did* nominate made it.

I'm glad to hear that at least.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to sign up for. There are fewer fandoms I'm in on the list than before (which is why I really should have nominated a few.) But I'm sure I can find enough, and I'd hate to miss out.

If there were a bad-taste line, the Care Bears BDSM fic would have crossed it years ago.

*snort*

Seriously, I realize that Hetalia has issues, and that's part of why I never got into it, but the only reason I'd want it out of Yuletide is that I also don't get why it's not eliminated due to having a bunch of fic.

There have been other fandoms on the list that have iffy material. I kind of doubt there is going to be truly offensive (due to history) fic coming out of Yuletide this year just because of Hetalia.

(Plus there are fandoms like the Bible. Bible fic offends a great number of people just by existing, but it seems to make the list every year.)

[info]gusty

Pretty much. I agree that Hetalia shouldn't count as being obscure, but what does something dumb some fans have done have to do with Yuletide? I bet if we searched news articles, we'd find something despicable done by a Star Wars fan or two. That fandom is much larger and older than Hetalia's by a landslide.

I feel like offensiveness is the place where 'we don't have the time/energy to try to judge this' is a legitimate excuse, because there are so many debatable points and there've been so many revisionist takes of problematic fandoms over the years.

But Hetalia's problems are in no way similar to an enjoyably absurd story about stuffed animals.

You have a good point there, and I shouldn't have implied they are.

But last year, if I remember correctly, there was some debate about Gone With the Wind and Breakfast at Tiffany's. (I don't think there was any debate about whether to include them (not sure if anyone nominated GWTW anyway.) And it turned out the person who requested Breakfast at Tiffany's wanted a redemptive rewrite of the horrific Mickey Rooney character, so that was pretty much OK too. (Come to think of it maybe that's what you're referring too... sorry for rambling on about it.)

I guess I just have trouble picturing a truly offensive Hetalia story being written for Yuletide. But that's naive of me, as all it would take is one in well over a thousand people making the request and getting matched.

IMO, you weren't the one implying it-- it was whoever brought up Slave Bear in the first place.

Yeah, the Breakfast at Tiffany's story was pretty awesome. I have Strong Opinions on Hetalia, but I certainly know people I like and respect who write non-faily fic about it. I just...we shouldn't even be having this discussion, because HETALIA IS TOO BIG omg.

I guess it depends on the subset of fandom? I'm into Hetalia myself, so I know others who like it as well, but a large portion of my friendslist hasn't even heard of the series before.

I think the reason Hetalia fandom seems so large is that those in it are really active, so the amount of content is pretty large.

That should on its face exclude Hetalia anyway, regardless of hugeness, since AFAIK Yuletide has always been based on the (small) amount of fic available*, not the size of fandom or popularity of canon. I am pretty sure that, oh, the Weather Channel** and The Shack*** are popular, but good luck finding fic.

*which makes the inclusion of several other of those anime fandoms on the list with Hetalia all the more hilarious, since googling "(fandom name) +fanfic" will get you seventy MAJIIIIILLIIIIIOOOOON hits. Sailor Moon / Escaflowne / WTF? old != small != dead

I didn't say anything about where the trolls came from; I said they're jerkasses. Regardless of origin, linking to fandom_wank still breaks its Rule #3.

Hetalia is not deeply important stuff, BUT insulting it was an inflammatory rhetorical fallacy in the original debate (big fandoms slipping onto the list due to questionable Yuletide modding), BUT that doesn't invalidate vom_marlowe's argument (questionable Yuletide modding), BUT because all attention is now on the inflammatory statement instead, the original argument is lost.

Trolling vom_marlowe's personal journal was still completely unwarranted; the trolls are in the wrong and are jerkasses.
