Uh. The author implies that Sesame Street was going for shock value, which... no. As for shocking rural audiences, rural =/= "sheltered, homogeneous white population." Multiracial, multicultural casts on kids' shows made people in my childhood neighborhood quietly uncomfortable, and we were in a middle-class, largely but not entirely white D.C. suburb.
