Bishounen Hideto ([info]bishounenhideto) wrote in [info]unfunny_fandom,
The real issue here involving the whys of everything that happened is that women are maginalized in furry fandom. Furry has been twisted and abused to represent a group of people who are so accepting and loving, that an actual interest in viewing or collecting anthropomorphic paraphernalia is no longer required or even asked about. What ended up happening was the co-option of "furrydom" into a sexually accepting and even sexually promoting society, with male homosexuality being very prominent within the group. One of the more well-organized, well known furry social groups, "TorFur" short for "Toronto Furry" out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada had made such a sexually-charged public spectacle of itself that a local restaurant they frequented, the Old Spaghetti Factory, would open up and turn on the lights of closed sections in the back of the restaurant where most patrons couldn't see them, and seat them there, out of view. When the TorFur community first started eating there regularly, no such quarantining was done to them.

TorFur, and I suspect a lot of localized furry social groups, also have a low female-to-male ratio. So couple rampant sexuality and disregard for sexual appropriateness with a low number of females and high number of gay males who openly and publically choose to disregard sexual appropriateness, and there is a recipe for ignoring, downplaying, or blame-shifting against female members of the fandom.

Before anyone tries to misread me, I am not saying most gay males are sexually inappropriate, or that any random gay furry male will have a high likelihood to be sexually inappopriate. I'm saying if you allow your subculture to devolve into sexual expression as it's main focus when that was not previously intended to be the dominant purpose or focus of expression, sexual inappopriateness will arise more easily. A disregard for someone's physical or emotional state due directly to sexual misconduct is sexually inappropriate.

Anybody remember that east European weirdo who travelled around and coerced many different hosts into homosexually exploitive relationships, going so far as stalking people if they refused his advances or tried to throw him out of their homes? (I forget his name, but he loved lions.)
