Marvel Comics Creator Wank! Get your creator wank here!
All right, I warn ahead of time that I came to this wank late, and the only posts I've found on the subject have been somewhat ... one-sided, shall we say. I was a little unsure as to whether this could make it over on [info]fandom_wank, so followed the 'When in doubt' rule.

(Also, forgive the attention-whoring, but I'm ill and 2010 has decided to give my arse a few parting kicks on the way out. Distract meeeeee.)

Background: Lots and lots of Spider-man fans are, shall we say, quite unhappy about the events of Brand New Day and since, where Peter Parker gave up his life with wife Mary Jane (and all his memories of her) in a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May's life. The whole plot was almost certainly an act of Editorial Intervention, since the guy in charge at Marvel, Joe Quesada, is well-known as hating Mary Jane and her relationship with Spidey. I don't read the Spider-man comics, but by all accounts the writing since this has not improved things a jot.

Secondary background: [info]box_in_the_box is well known for constant whining about what he refers to as NuSpidey. YMMV on how much of it is justified, but you cannot deny that that's a loooot of complaining.

So, on with the show!
The Beat, a popular comics blog, makes an entry which calls out a message board attack on Dan Slott, Amazing Spider-Man's current writer, as a 'Jerk of the world'. To recap, Slott responded to seeing one fan's accusation of hackery with a ... somewhat disproportionate rant. Just a little.

Dan Slott, you see, spends perhaps a little bit too much time on the internet. But hey, the guy says he's sick and overworked, maybe that was just a one-off, right?

Apparently not.

[info]bitemetechie makes brief reference to the previous debacle on her LJ... only to have Slott himself show up in the comments.

Since the guy showed up to pick a fight in a stranger's LJ, [info]neo_prodigy takes the opportunity to call out Slott for racist writing, with particular regard to the Norah Winters character, about which fans have been complaining for some time now...

And apparently manages to drive Slott off LJ in one comment.

Slott may be down, but he's not out! He takes to Twitter with his grievances, as he has done before:

"You make a living on writing a racist character who denigrates people of color and you have the fucking gall to —" Mark the date, 12/15/10, that's the point I hit the richest vein of Internet-Crazy. Someone I've never addressed or talked to on the web, addressing me for working on Spider-Man 'cause he's a "racist character?" What now? OK ... cross LJ off from places to "visit." Crazy, please stay in that corner. :)

You might think that would be it ... but you'd be wrong.

Slott pokes his head above the parapet once again, in response to a later post by [info]neo_prodigy over at Ars Marginal, [info]neo_prodigy's other blogging site.

In response, [info]neo_prodigy and [info]afro_dyte/RVCBard attempt to ban Slott and delete his comments, but the guy just keeps coming back! For bonus: witness Slott's flailing about his constitutional rights! Flail, Slott! Flail!

[info]box_in_the_box (as K-Box, unless I am very much mistaken) keeps baiting the guy, but you know what? In this case, I can't entirely blame him.

By way of conclusion, Ars Marginal posts another entry outlining ALL of Slott's known bullshit, both professional and extremely unprofessional.

The end?

Maybe not ... since if [info]box_in_the_box is to be believed, we have sockpuppetry!

PROFESSIONAL sockpuppetry.

Seriously, if it weren't for the hideous racism, this would be an amazing [info]fandom_wank post.

I thought this was going to be musical wank and I am slightly disappointed.

Here's a link to box_in_the_box's past wankery. I know neo_prodigy's been in a wank report somewhere, but I can't remember where at the moment.

OMG! I said “FUCK”! How will the world go on? That’s 1 less “fuck” for Tieri, Ellis, Bendis, and a zillion other comic creators to say! :-O

It’s my own fault for not saying “fuck” enough. I need to dilute it. Here: fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuckity-fuck-fuck-fuck.

Fuck, fuck, fuck fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, FUUUUUUCK. — Seriously, people, that’s how Frank Tieri says “Good Morning.”

FUCK!

I'm glad I don't read any Marvel titles currently.

I could do something about that, but it would REALLY be one-sided -- what you have there, from what I've seen, are maybe two people who've said "I've seen it and it's worth the hype" and then EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD saying some variant of "Julie Taymor/Bono/The Edge need to stop this or OSHA/Actors Equity/The NYC DA's office needs to make them." Is it still a wank if public opinion is near-universal?

(I actually participated; I've been a U2 fan for nearly 20 years, but it's only now that I've written to them -- but I didn't write as a fan, I wrote as a theater professional urging them both "dudes, seriously, you need to pull the plug on this.")

There's been what? Four accidents now and the lead actress just quit?

This may be the Scottish Play of the 21st century if the disasters keep happening. I worry we might see someone killed...:(

I think it'll turn into a wank once they pull the plug and the public finger-pointing starts. Until then, it's just a spectacle.

I did have someone really, ah, passionate show up on my journal and teal-deer a bit. My favorite part was when she insisted that actors want to die for their art, and a theater professional showed up and said, "No, I am pretty sure we do not want to die for Spider-Man."

"No, I am pretty sure we do not want to die for Spider-Man."

Even worse is if you die for Spider-Man and then come back from the grave as a Marvel Zombie.

Never mind, I found it on my own~ And seriously, I can understand the mindset he/she is talking about, when you are so invested in something you can't get perspective about the situation you're in -- but I don't think that's necessarily a Wonderful Thing, I think that sometimes that is when you need someone to tell you to stop.

Yeah, I can't remember if I saw the thread in time to comment on it, but my primary reaction was, this is exactly why they need to pull the plug: because people that passionate won't be able to. I'm sorry, dying for art is insane. Dying for your beliefs, which you are expressing through art--say, as a revolutionary--I could possibly see. I cannot see dying for community theater, or even a Broadway musical. And you know, it's your choice to die for your art, if you're just that bent on it, but maybe the other dozens of people working on that show because they love the job, need that job, and need to support themselves, don't exactly want to die because shoddy safety compliance results in a cable whacking them in the head. Which is what happened to the actress who quit. I mean, without the dying part. This is dying for your art WHEN IT WOULD BE COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE.

That's exactly why I loathe the movie Sommersby.

I am really, really glad I didn't see that comment, or I think I would have wanked all over your journal and I know you don't want that.

SERIOUSLY? Oh my god.

I feel kinda bad that the show's gone south as much as it has, since I normally like Julie Taymor.

I assume that's why we haven't had more wank about BND, almost everyone seems to agree it's terrible.

Oh wait we were talking about the musical. My bad. That's pretty terrible too.

Everyone except Joe Q, and he's the One Man at Marvel who's got the One Vote. :p
