Oh, I agree that her motivations are understandable, and as Austen characters go, she's actually quite entertaining.

I was thinking about your comment earlier, and I realized that Caroline does, in a way, get her own back. B/c I think Emma and Caroline actually have a great deal in common, though I think Emma is more well-intentioned than Caroline.
