The level of magical medical care in the Potterverse reinforces this, as most things other than death, insanity, etc (everything that falls, not coincidentally, under the "Unforgivables") can be fixed. No lasting consequences, and the initial trauma tends to get brushed off, though this may be at least partially because the books are written for children. In a society where even maiming isn't permanent, that sense of mortality may take even longer to develop than in ours.
