Ah, that's true. How could I forget the appalling 19th century asylums? And yes, I agree that Bertha isn't abused. Not well taken care of by modern standards, of course...but yeah, it seems Mr. Rochester tried to keep her from harm the best he knew how. Once more, I'm very glad I don't live in the 19th century.
And also, seeing as it was the 19th century, divorce would have been hard to pull off so I guess Mr. Rochester was kind of stuck being married to Bertha. He was certainly wrong to not tell Jane the truth before he tried to marry her or even have an affair with her, though.
