Sometimes, there are no words.
[info]_dahne_ writes a screed about how being "PC" has gone too far.

I don't even know what to say about this, other than someone needs to have their privilege checked. Badly. (Except, of course, that "Privilege, like 'troll' or 'fail' can now mean whatever we want it to mean, so my little statement there is apparently OPPRESHUN of her truth. Or something.)

I count sexism, ablism, heterocentrism, and I'm pretty sure racism in this one sentence alone:
The male side of fandom runs around calling each other niggerfaggots while the female side has earnest ten-page debates on whether calling something crazy is ablist.
(Emphasis hers)

Because the boys doing that is totes okay, y'all, and the girls should be doing the same thing. And men never, ever talk about whether what they're saying is hurtful to other people or not, 'cause that's girly stuff. (Hey, wankaboys, come and sit in the invisible corner with us bisexuals, English majors, and ampersands.)

And then there's this:
Like the idea of "tone argument." At its core, this makes sense; it's meant to address the idea that abused classes of people shouldn't have to be deferential to their abusers in order to be listened to.

In practice, what it means is, "I'm allowed to be an asshole as long as I'm really, really sure I'm right."

I just...I can't. I mean, the tools of the master will never tear down the master's house, but come on. By refusing to accept the tenets of the tone argument, we're bullying the people in power?

Whut?

And both examples are from the first seven paragraphs of her little screed. There's also kind of a priceless gem in there about Fandom_Wank being a "prime vector" for "too much" political correctness.

And I think the worst bit is (as far as I could tell before the comments were pushing me to the ragey point) she's not getting any disagreement.

I would love to be able to write a thoughtful rebuttal that might be as widespread in fandom as this one's (apparently) getting, but I'm afraid my brain keeps hanging up on What Is This I Don't Even.

ETA: [info]t_boy found swordygardner's response which is a breath of fresh air in amongst all that fail. ETA 2: In fact, pretty much all of page 2 of the comments (which is about the point she turned off anon commenting, I'll bet you), is pretty awesome.

Unfortunately for me, it was mostly the opposite. I'm considering PMing avocado_love to ask that my fics be removed from her rec list.

Oh, suck. :(

I know people who have said, "I can't handle the intensity of debates around social justice issues and I think people who call fail sometimes get over-nasty, so I'm gonna sit over here, not participate, and just do what I know to be right without joining the movement" which I can respect (especially when those people do work, in their own way, against oppression). But people who think social justice activism stole their ice cream cone and is stupid anyway? Ugh.

PM sent, kept it to a short "Hi, please remove my fics," because I didn't think I could follow her precious politeness rule if I tried to elaborate. Her claim that, as a former bully, she could tell that activists were just being bullies made my vision go white. I was a bullied kid. I am still bullied, even though I am not a kid anymore, for things that I can not help, like being bi or having medical conditions. Even though she was speaking generally and not about me specifically, her equating me sometimes snapping at the people picking on me with picking on people made me absolutely nauseous.

BEHOLD:

I used to be a bully when I was in school. Like, the beat up on other kids stereotype you hope your precious nerdy son/daughter never meet. I grew up and matured (eventually), but when this ultra-sensitive PC bullshit started happening... I recognized the patterns. I saw how this wasn't really about race or sexism or ableism... this was about holding power over another person.

I nearly threw up.

What the unholy shit did I just READ?

I just...I mean...what the FUCK is this I don't even.

Protip: if you insist that people are bullying YOU for calling you out on your shit, then clearly you haven't matured worth a damn. Delusions of maturity sauced liberally with privilege: two great tastes that go great together only not at all.

Yeah that - I didn't know if I could find the words to even describe that cause that - I was ill.

A complete lack of understanding, that's all I can call it. :( I admire your restraint cause I couldn't fucking do it.

I haven't been all that active in Avatar fandom for the past several months, so I'd missed out on nearly all of her fail. This kerfuffle made me go and look at some of the other things and now I just feel ill.

Oh, this was before the movie was released. Basically, she was one of the ones complaining about how Racebending.com was harshing her squee and saying that she was racist for being excited about the movie and how we were controlling fandom and silencing dissent - one of about twenty commenters on every movie-related post saying the same things before an actual Racebending.com member said anything.

See, I started avoiding movie posts on LJ way early in the game (mostly due to dv8nation), because I knew there'd be assholery, which is how I didn't know she was one of the assholes. And someone brought up fandomsecrets in the post about this over on sf_d, so I went to look over some of the threads on -isms there, and God, she is just all over the place with fail. Which is really making me feel like an idiot now for not seeing it sooner. I just... wasn't in the right places to cross it, I guess.

I kind of doubt it; when I pointed out that the post was locked and I couldn't therefore share it the response was "oops, I hadn't realized it was locked."

If the response had been "So?" then I might suspect the person of being the same mouse.

Aw man, I hate it when someone who writes stuff I enjoy turns out to be an asshat. See: Orson Scott Card, Elizabeth Moon, several other fanfic writers. It really makes me enjoy their work a ton less, to the point I end up eventually giving it up, even if they don't get any money from me. :(

I hate it too, but I'd rather know who I'm dealing with. Though it gets to be a pain in the ass when it seems like every other A-list actor turns out to be a hateful, abusive prick with rage issues and a huge collection of diamonds and ivory.

Yeah, and it *does* make sure I never give them money again (in the case of published authors). But it's so damn *frustrating*.

On the opposite side, it's actually made me like certain authors a bit better. Tamora Pierce, who is a great author anyway, is very vocal about being a feminist and against bigotry.
