Sometimes, there are no words.
[info]_dahne_ writes a screed about how being "PC" has gone too far.

I don't even know what to say about this, other than someone needs to have their privilege checked. Badly. (Except, of course, that "Privilege, like 'troll' or 'fail' can now mean whatever we want it to mean, so my little statement there is apparently OPPRESHUN of her truth. Or something.)

I count sexism, ablism, heterocentrism, and I'm pretty sure racism in this one sentence alone:
The male side of fandom runs around calling each other niggerfaggots while the female side has earnest ten-page debates on whether calling something crazy is ablist.
(Emphasis hers)

Because the boys doing that is totes okay, y'all, and the girls should be doing the same thing. And men never, ever talk about whether what they're saying is hurtful to other people or not, 'cause that's girly stuff. (Hey, wankaboys, come and sit in the invisible corner with us bisexuals, English majors, and ampersands.)

And then there's this:
Like the idea of "tone argument." At its core, this makes sense; it's meant to address the idea that abused classes of people shouldn't have to be deferential to their abusers in order to be listened to.

In practice, what it means is, "I'm allowed to be an asshole as long as I'm really, really sure I'm right."

I just...I can't. I mean, the tools of the master will never tear down the master's house, but come on. By refusing to accept the tenets of the tone argument, we're bullying the people in power?

Whut?

And both examples are from the first seven paragraphs of her little screed. There's also kind of a priceless gem in there about Fandom_Wank being a "prime vector" for "too much" political correctness.

And I think the worst bit is (as far as I could tell before the comments were pushing me to the ragey point) she's not getting any disagreement.

I would love to be able to write a thoughtful rebuttal that might be as widespread in fandom as this one's (apparently) getting, but I'm afraid my brain keeps hanging up on What Is This I Don't Even.

ETA: [info]t_boy found swordygardner's response which is a breath of fresh air in amongst all that fail. ETA 2: In fact, pretty much all of page 2 of the comments (which is about the point she turned off anon commenting, I'll bet you), is pretty awesome.

I need a NO icon.

Did that person just compare those of us who want to live in a world without sexism, racism, ableism, and other negative isms to PLANTS?

No, of course not!

They compared those of us who want to live in a world without sexism, racism, ableism, and other negative isms to being a person who knows more about plants than the people they sell them to. Completely different.

Reply to that comment: it would have been better to say nothing
because people are going to get offended by being compared to plants
even though it's a good analogy, i'm not so sure people like being compared to plants

OP of that comment: They should consider it a compliment.

Oh, FUCK no.

Anything that poster says (the "it would be better to say nothing" one) can pretty much be ignored; he's notorious for telling people to in-real-life kill themselves, calling women cunts and telling them they're only good for making babies, and all around being a sexist, racist jerk who routinely whines about how girls in fandom just aren't fair to him and they're all feminazis. (Then he excuses it by pretending he was a puppetmaster troll and got you to dance on his strings.)

I'd go looking for the "go kill yourself" stuff, since it pretty well shows off everything wrong with his mentality, but I don't want to go digging. It's like wading through absolute shit.

Wow. Sad to see one of the few people disagreeing with that comment is interrobangings, who's kind of an asshole himself. This post just keeps on bringing the fail.

Oh wait, I take it back. Seems like leafing and interrobangings are friends, and he was mocking the people who would genuinely get irritated. Guess he's still an ass.

Also, all this discussion of privilege and oppression is great for sociologists, but it doesn't apply to everyday life. I mean, it's not like there are marginalized people in the real world!

(At least they're honest about how little they care about other people?)

"Mistreating a plant is just like calling someone a racist slur."

Although I mostly read her comment like "Plants are just like racism, u guis. Except how it's totally not. EXCEPT HOW IT TOTALLY IS."

If someone takes me to a tree in their yard and says that it doesn't look healthy, I'm going to try to figure out the problem and how to fix it - I'm not going to say "Go google it, you ignorant fuck."

Wow. Just... wow. This... is this a non-sequitur logical fallacy? Cuz what the GODDAMNED HELL does this have to do with political correctness and equal treatment for all humans? How does this whole hypothetical scenario even relate to sociology, let alone the point of the whole damned failpile?

Goddamn, I don't even know if I want to read below that comment to see if people are calling this idiot out on his or her complete lack of comprehension. I mean, dude. In scientific classification, humans and plants are separated all the way up to the KINGDOM. That's like the very beginning of the chart. People are NOT like plants, not even remotely.

Without reading the comment (Idontwanttoyoucantmakeme)...that particular line sounds like a response to the "this is not a 101 space" argument. (Or a response to "I am not here to educate you.") Both of which are valid for different reasons (depending on the location, I do have some issues with the former, but not the latter).

But still.

Oh dear gods, what a clusterfuck this has become. I have anxiety that can get triggered in intense internet discussions like this, and I hope she's able to disengage and heal. Doesn't make what she said any less offensive, though, and I hope that if she's able to come back, she'll see that using her SI attack to shame other people for disagreeing with her was not on.

The clusterfuck around this comment has gotten really, really nasty on all sides, spread across various communities, but I've posted this before and I think it deserves to be posted again:

I'm acquainted with leafing from another community. Yes, that comment looks like one giant tortured and extremely inappropriate metaphor, but to put it in context--a plant metaphor is a typical leafing thing to say. She's obsessed with plants. Plants are her life. She has clinical depression and a difficult home life, and her main coping mechanism is to escape from the world and from people by tending her beloved plants. She sends plant seeds with her Christmas cards. She says herself that she doesn't understand people. In other words, she is probably not neurotypical, and her (inappropriate to the situation) use of a plant metaphor is a manifestation of that. That comment should be viewed with this in mind.

I'm not saying that there are no problems with what she's said, I'm saying that for everyone going "what is even going on in this comment?," there is an explanation for what seems, on the surface, to be complete WTF.
