Current mood:WTF??

Since today seems to be all about this kind of fail
Oh, no, Lucas and Spielberg and Kasdan, no!

Possibly triggering for molestation/victim blaming, definitely rage-inducing.

This.

From what I've seen, Spielberg may have realized this; by the time he started making Last Crusade, he was apparently worried about including the whole subplot that Elsa had slept with both Indy and his dad, as he was concerned about the possible feminist backlash, but Sean Connery insisted that it be kept in. Since then, I think that Spielberg having a family of his own (especially being a dad) has made him reevaluate things even further.

More people who got entirely the wrong message from Lolita. And this makes me think Lucas has had an obsession with stories of "romance" involving young teenagers for a long time. Or, you, know, children, considering Anakin's age when he started coming on to Padme.

Once she’s sixteen or seventeen it’s not interesting anymore.

Wut.

Well, this was in the 70s -- I really hope they've gotten less, um, gross (and/or coked out), in the intervening years.

George Lucas: He’s thirty-five, and he knew her ten years ago when he was twenty-five and she was only twelve. It would be amusing to make her slightly young at the time.

Steven Spielberg: And promiscuous. She came onto him.

George Lucas: Fifteen is right on the edge. I know it’s an outrageous idea, but it is interesting. Once she’s sixteen or seventeen it’s not interesting anymore.

Yeah, it stops being interesting when it stops being rape.

Well, I can always brush that off like those were the mores of yesteryear, when there was more socially accepted that a 14 years old could be married with men twice her age without no one batting an eye, hitting in a girl would be acceptable once she hitted puberty and grow tits, and people was less squeamish about having sex with people under 18 years old.
...
Yeah, I got nothing.
No, wait, I got something: George Lucas has the same criteria about intergenerational relationships (for giving it a name) that 70% of the men in my backwater country. I'm still on the edge of deciding if that is bad or very bad.

While I admit to recoiling in disgust over this, I also have to admit I am a bit leery too, because there's a lot of underage (and rape, and incest) stuff in fanfic. Then it's all, "It's just fiction! We're just exploring it in FICTION! We don't actually want it in real life!"

Never mind me, I'm just working out where to judge and on what criteria and how much of a hypocrite I am.
