Current mood:WTF??

Since today seems to be all about this kind of fail
Oh, no, Lucas and Spielberg and Kasdan, no!

Possibly triggering for molestation/victim blaming, definitely rage-inducing.

"I was a child! I was in love. It was wrong, and you knew it."

This line just got a whooooole lot more uncomfortably literal.

I'm just going to 'Death of the Author' that line and keep assuming it meant that she'd had a pre-teen crush on Indy that he found amusing and didn't entirely discourage. Never did anything about it, ever, just...thought it was cute.

It's much better for my blood pressure.

That's how I've always heard it, and that's how I will continue to hear it. She had a crush, he turned her down, the end.

...fuck you, Lucas.

I always thought she was exaggerating about being a child, the same way mothers will wail "He took my baby from me!" when said "baby" is 23. For the sake of my fond memories of that movie, I'll continue to assume that.

It's so much prettier in one's brain when one can act like authorial intention doesn't exist.

I always assumed it meant they'd had an affair when she was in her late teens. 17-19 or so. Young enough that she could still say she was a "child," but old enough to be involved.

I did too. Fifteen, maybe, at least. But now?

Yeah, if he was in his mid-twenties and all "Seventeen is legal in the country we're in now, so it's okay!", it'd still be wrong enough for her to justifiably be pissed off at him, but not nauseatingly creepy.

Or, as George Lucas calls it, "interesting".

Not to mention the time period. Even if she was 100% USA legal age, sex between unmarried people was a huge issue then. I always took it that she was a virgin and he had no desire to 'do the right thing' and marry her, since that would have been the expectation of the time.

Yeah, that was how I always read it - she was 16 at the youngest and a "child" in the sense of being young and naive, but not actually a child, and he was 23-25 and self-centered but not actually deliberately manipulative.

Must've missed the line, "You knew what you were doin'," then.

How many teenagers (let alone tweens) actually do, though?

I'd say a large number of them don't understand the emotional mess that will come with it.

My point was that it was pretty clear through the text that they did something, not that she was any bit talented at it.

Yeah, if (say) he'd smirked and condescendingly patted her on her head after her confession of love, it would have been wrong, because that'd be a really jerkish thing to do. I'll stick to that interpretation.

I always thought that line referred to a professor/student, conflict of interest, professional ethics kind of idea. I never thought it had to do with age, or underage.

arglebargle. :-( Now I'll be putting it in the same file as the moment where I finally understood all the lyrics to "Don't stand so close to me"...
