Current mood:WTF??

Since today seems to be all about this kind of fail
Oh, no, Lucas and Spielberg and Kasdan, no!

Possibly triggering for molestation/victim blaming, definitely rage-inducing.

Steven Spielberg: And promiscuous. She came onto him.

And that? Right there? That's when Steven Spielberg became dead to me. Schindler's List? Shoah Foundation? All for fucking naught. Go to gehenna, Shmuely, and don't wait for me there, you fraudulent POS shander.

While the bit you've quoted is pretty vile, I genuinely believe the Spielberg of today is a different, and better, man than he was back then. From what I've seen, he actually seems to acknowledge the views of most of his critics, and tries to better himself from them.

Lucas, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about...

Hmm, you know how here are people who still hate Woody Allen for marrying his ex's young but still adult daughter? I feel inclined to feel the same way about Spielberg. C'est la vie.

I never had any good thoughts or feelings about Lucas or Kasdan. In fact, I have only negative feelings about both.

From all the times I've heard about young teenage girls "coming on" to guys... is that men misinterpreting 14-year-olds with really intense crushes? Like, when I was in junior high and my brother brought home a friend from college whom I thought was really cute, and followed him all over googly-eyed the whole time, these guys would have thought that was me saying "I want you to rape hhave sex with me!"

I don't know if it's misinterpretation, or wishful thinking along the lines of "damn social mores, if only it weren't frowned upon, think of all the young tail I could've scored!"

I've been trying to think of a way to put this that doesn't sound like I'm agreeing with them, but I'm going to try.

Some fourteen-year-olds with really intense crushes on older guys want, or think they want, to have sex for whatever reason. Maybe she thinks that's what relationships are, maybe there are other issues in her life, maybe she's been molested already. It happens. But whatever's going through her head, that does not mean she really understands what's going on, that it constitutes informed consent, or that the older guy can say 'she wants it, it's okay.' It's not okay, and it is the responsibility of the adult in the situation to gently reject such advances if they do occur.

(I'm still not sure if I'm making sense - I just remember being a fourteen-year-old with really confused ideas about relationships, sex, and marriage, and if I hadn't been quite so painfully shy, it's not at all a stretch for me to think that I would have tried to initiate something like that with one of the older guys I crushed on.)

Yeah, I agree with you. I know women who say "You know what, I had sex with older men when I was 14 and it was awesome" but... I still can't help but think statutory rape laws and age of consent are a really good idea because sometimes young'uns just don't know what they're getting into and need to be protected from themselves.

I'm glad it came through all right. I kept thinking 'do I need more qualifiers? I don't want to sound like I'm saying it's okay to victimize "promiscuous" young teenagers!'

(I swear, I've talked myself out of commenting so many times out of fear of saying something asinine.)
