The Wonder Woman trainwreck keeps on keeping on

It's a dark time in the DC universe. The Wonder Woman title is still stuck in some kind of inexplicable AU timeline where Diana finally got to wear pants, in exchange for not being actually heroic or effective or competent or anything.

How the main universe and nu!Wondy are even supposed to make sense together (since Wondy Classic has been MIA since this started) has so far stayed a vague, wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey open question. And as such a pivotal turning point for Wonder Woman the character *and* the mythos, of course somebody decided that it would best to reveal such a crucial part of her superhero origin in Superman's book and make it all. About. Him. (See exhibits A, B, C, D, E, and F for Why This Is Stupid And Sexist As Hell.)

Naturally, jlbarnett, limitless source of the unfunny, is just plain oblivious to logic as well as patronizing, spawning a long thread about the nature of the phrase "calm down." Apparently being angry with sexism is the real oppression at work here. Who knew?

Damn, that's just one big pile of fail. Both the comic, and the thread.

Last time I checked, though, the mods were pretty quick on the ball. I expect this post to be locked down soon, with yet another "this is the ethos, you will follow it, it is not up for discussion" reminder to follow.

Avoiding the unfunny comments because the rest is bad enough.

I really like the costume redesign -- without that shitty '90's half jacket thing it looks really great. Which is a pity since it's attached to such a terrible reboot of the character. DC's always been bad with its female characters, and I'm beyond furious that that's currently fucking up Diana, who's so awesome. I know this is an alternate character and all, but if this part of her backstory sticks around, how is she ever going to be an equal and essential part of the Trinity ffs? Just from an in universe perspective this is a terrible idea. And then you add the fail to is and, and RAGE!

So much this. I loved the redesign too, even as fanboys were screaming in rage about it (I swear, nerds will bitch about anything. ANYTHING. And yes, that includes me, HERE I GO!) but why is it so difficult to write her? Just take 5 minutes and think of her like a normal person IT'S NOT THAT HARD!

I kind of hate that everyone is saying "get Gail Simone back on it" not because I disagree - I think they're right - but because she shouldn't have to keep jumping back to bail out that sinking ship. As it is, she BARELY gets to write anything that isn't considered a primarily female book (so much love for Birds of Prey, though!) like women can only write women while men can write anyone, despite the fact that she's proven her ability to write dudes again and again. She shouldn't be the only one who can do this. Again, IT'S NOT HARD!

...sorry...got caught up in the moment.

I...uh, like the jacket. I know. It's not in vogue, but I like it as a sort of comfort thing. Like when you grab your favorite hoodie before walking out the door and it can hide her more...boobtastic shirt from the front if she just wants to walk to the local corner market to grab a coke.

I gave up on comics about a year ago. After trying for about a year. Why? Because at some point I realized a female, my opinion nor wants in a book didn't matter anymore than they had for the Stargate production team.

This is why I gave up reading comics and starting drawing/writing them. And then people look at me funny when I say that I love comics, and then say, "Oh no, I don't read many or buy them, just a few indie titles."

Really, there's only one way to fix this: bring back Gail Simone. After all, she managed to wrangle the aftermath of Amazons Attack and turn it into something worth reading, surely she can do the same with this shit.

Indeed.

I saw one of his more recent reviews where he raged about the authors killing off a little girl solely for shock value, and how it ruined not only that comic, but the one she was introduced in, which was a good comic he enjoyed. I felt so bad for him, and for the character, because... yeah, no.

I like Linkara. I find his accent rather adorable.

In the meantime, here's Linkara's reaction to Wondy's new outfit, as well as to JMS taking over.

Scans Daily: constantly reminding me why I don't venture out into the larger parts of comics fandom. Because you get this much fail in a feminist, queer-positive, moderated space, then I do not want to see the mainstream boards.

The DC fail... wtf. I just... I can't even. This on top of retconning Oracle so that Batman's the one who motivated her to get back in action after Killing Joke. Can't a female hero just be inspired by herself?

Don't be ridiculous.

Wimmenz don't have the power of imagination, creativity, or intellect. Women can only imitate the majestic power of the cock.

This happened in that Road Home one shot (by the same author who wrote the hated Nightwing Annual 2), right, not the actual Birds of Prey book? Let's just hope everyone forgot it and it didn't sell well. D:

Eventually they're just going to put Frank Miller in charge of everything and all female characters will be either Evil Whores (who have their own agenda and don't take direction from a man) or Good Whores (who listen to what men say, bone the ugly dude because they can see his inner beauty, and are also ninjas).

Then they'll go "Obviously we're writing for the dude market, because women don't read comics!"

Wait.

Wait.

Wonder Woman didn't figure out she could be a superhero until Superman told her to do it? 'Cos she hadn't realized 'til now that she could actually help people?

THIS MAKES TOTAL SENSE. I AM SO GLAD I READ THAT.

I know very little about Wonder Woman, but didn't she come from a female-dominated society? Why the hell does she need a man to tell her what to do? (Even if Superman isn't in so many words ordering her to be a hero.)

Why the hell would WW need anyone to tell her what to do with her life?

It kinda reminds me of the episode where Hercules turned Xena from OMG WARRIOR DESTROYER to a doer of good deeds. Except in her situation, they developed upon it and it turns out that it was the last straw in a huge line of things that happened to change her mind about her life. Xena had a tragic, horrible past and did some fucking awful things that she knows she can never make up for. That was kind of the whole point of the character.

Why bring that facet of her development into Wonder Woman, who already has a lush and vibrant backstory? I just don't understand. It's not necessary. And Supes already has the world wearing sunnies every time he turns around and bends over, he doesn't need Wonder Woman treating him like a fucking Messiah too. Of course, I don't read too many DC comics (Poor, haven't had the joy of doing that yet) and am not so up on their past canon. I always thought that Wonder Woman and Superman would have a sort of professional respect for each other, an affection as equals. This origin story totally makes Wonder Woman into a subordinate character, and that is really fucking dodgy.

Also, Xena almost never cites Hercules as her reason for staying on the straight and narrow from, like, series 2 onwards. It's always Gabrielle.

(Don't mind me - just making my way through the complete box set for the first time :D)
