The Wonder Woman trainwreck keeps on keeping on

It's a dark time in the DC universe. The Wonder Woman title is still stuck in some kind of inexplicable AU timeline where Diana finally got to wear pants, in exchange for not being actually heroic or effective or competent or anything.

How the main universe and nu!Wondy are even supposed to make sense together (since Wondy Classic has been MIA since this started) has so far stayed a vague, wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey open question. And as such a pivotal turning point for Wonder Woman the character *and* the mythos, of course somebody decided that it would best to reveal such a crucial part of her superhero origin in Superman's book and make it all. About. Him. (See exhibits A, B, C, D, E, and F for Why This Is Stupid And Sexist As Hell.)

Naturally, jlbarnett, limitless source of the unfunny, is just plain oblivious to logic as well as patronizing, spawning a long thread about the nature of the phrase "calm down." Apparently being angry with sexism is the real oppression at work here. Who knew?

I know very little about Wonder Woman, but didn't she come from a female-dominated society? Why the hell does she need a man to tell her what to do? (Even if Superman isn't in so many words ordering her to be a hero.)

Why the hell would WW need anyone to tell her what to do with her life?

The ongoing retcon of Fail that is this current reboot, that's why.

The Amazon society got destroyed somehow or other (I'm not reading all of it, forgive my lack of details), Diana is now younger and new to being a hero, etc. This may or may not stay as canon.

JMS decided/declared, when he took the reins, that her accumulated cast were lame and he wanted to ditch them all and start with a clean slate.

This from the same writer who brought back Thor with all of HIS awesome supporting cast. Who are mostly men. MANLY men.

Sigh, why, JMS? I'm currently rewatching Babylon 5, and it did pretty good overall, I think - highranked POC, gay marriages completely normalized, lots of awesome female characters (could do better, of course). What happened to the poor fellow?

My bet? His mind somehow got warped when he collaborated with Joe Quesada on One More Day, even though he pulled out at the last minute.

Then again, it's probably like Linkara says in the link I've posted in an above thread: you can be a good writer, but just not be suited for a particular character/title.

I can agree with that, I've even seen it in practice a few times - As Linkara himself pointed out with Johns and Wonder Woman. Ah Linkara, part of why I love the man is that even when I disagree with him, he's got good reasons for his views.
Sometimes I think people just need to step back and own up to it when a character just doesn't work with a certain writer rather than continuing to force it.

It gets worse. I haven't been following it since (because, ugh), but looking at some other comments on that post, it seems he's gone and handed the title over to ANOTHER writer (his understudy?) who is even less capable of making anything good out of this mass of FAIL.

Sigh. I mean, after what I heard about Amazons Attack it is kinda expected, but...

...DC really doesn't like the Amazons, huh?
