Star Trek endorses Rape Culture
(TW: Rape Culture, objectification, enslaving women)

Hey everybody? You know what Star Trek needs? More objectification and exploitation of women! But we'll make them *green*, and alien so that it differentiates them from Earth women. That'll throw off the feminist hordes!

What am I talking about?

Why, Official Star Trek Fratboy shirts featuring the words "ORION SLAVES GONE WILD" on a t-shirt specifically being marketed to Frat Boys for Spring Break.

I wish I was kidding. I *so* wish I was kidding. I think what hurts the most about this is this is Star Trek. Ostensibly, it's supposed to be inclusive.

Bonus: These shirts were advertised on the official Star Trek Facebook page! No warning, no words, just a trigger out of the friggin' blue, with a heapin' help of "Get back in the kitchen" jokes for any women that complained about it in the comment thread.

ETA: http://www.facebook.com/StarTrek/posts/194446503919172

- I get threatened to be whipped.
- One guy threatened to show me what it was like to *not* survive a rape, but thankfully that was taken down. You see the fallout of that comment later.

Why is it when someone merely *mentions* that something might be exploitative or offensive in a firm tone that challenges the status quo, the death threats and the rage!posting occurs? It's like fucking clockwork.

Although it looks like someone has now removed those comments, thankfully. No screenshots, but at least one later commentor quoted it.

*Raises hand* That was me (Disclosure: I only just saw this post, I wasn't trolling the wank). Also note the (female) commenter threatening to whip her to get her to STFU. Charming.

I didn't get any caps unfortunately but the deleted comments are pretty much Obnoxious Misogyny 101;
*I'm ugly.
*I'm angry because I don't have a man to "pound me."
*He doesn't care what I think because I'm submissive to him and he won't listen until I get a man to speak for me.
*I need to "get back to my job at Starbucks."
*"When did men start putting computers in kitchens?"
*"This is what happens when men let their cunts off the leash."
*"This is what happens when people are allowed to think for themselves." (by "People" I assume he means women.)
*My opinion is worthless because I live in England which makes me not even a person, much less a woman. FYI, I live in Scotland, but whatever.

There was more. He's so edgy. With hindsight, he was blatantly a troll so I shouldn't have engaged but the threats he made to that rape survivor were so disgusting, I couldn't let it lie.

It's like a minature version of the Penny Arcade debacle. They go on and on about how trivial it is yet they go from nought to violent rhetoric in no time at all.

I'm glad I missed all that. Just reading about it is giving me Dizzy!Head. I never used to get that, it wasn't until I was assaulted. After that, when I'm triggered in a huge way and I feel overwhelmed by the aggression, I get dizzy sitting down. I have to actually step away and calm down or I will fall unconscious.

I never thought that I would feel unwelcome in Trek fandom. What pisses me off is that I've been a Trek fan longer than most of these shitheads have been alive.

He can say he's trolling and doing it for the lulz all he likes but at the end of the day, these tactics are about intimidating and shaming women into silence (or into agreeing and cheerleading for them) and quite frankly, I was buggered if I was going to go along with that.

It's the level of agression and vitriol that slays me. Are they so intimidated at a women expressing an opinion that they have to lash out like this? It's really pathetic.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. You really shouldn't have to put up with this bullshit.

Well, I wish I could say it was a surprise, but after the bullshit that was the Penny Arcade Clusterfuck, I'm not. I'm really not.

But thanks. I think the most upsetting thing is that a lot of these people that harrassed me are younger than I am, and are probably nowhere near as dedicated to Trek as I've been in the past. Doesn't count if you had the dumb luck (or lack there-of) to be born a woman.

And you might even remember when a lot of literary SF fandom was snarling at Trek fandom as the Kids On The Lawn.

I remember it more as STOP GIRLING UP SF WITH YOUR STUPID BEING GIRLS YOU BIG BUNCH OF GIRLS.

Now, of course, Star Trek is classic SF so WE'VE GOT TO CLEAN THE GIRLINESS OUT OF IT.

All those comments are horrible (that isn't a strong enough word for it but I don't know what is).

I always hate when "pound" is used in reference to sex which I hope the poster meant because it doesn't make me think of sex because the alternative is getting beat up. Which all be it, gives good reason angry though it would have NOTHING AT ALL to do with this post. And neither does sex save objectification of women.

Unfortunately this reminds me that fandom at large still has ways to go before it becomes a safe space for women.

It was a reference to sex, I'm pretty sure the word "cunt" was involved somewhere but I can't remember the exact quote. And yeah, I hate it too because its equating violence with sex which I'm pretty sure is indicitave of something. Oh yeah, that'd be rape culture.

That's the thing: They may do it for trolling, but that doesn't make it any better. In fact, it makes it worse:

It shows that this guy is drowning in misogyny so much that he thinks death threats and rape threats are just a way to mock people. Complete and utter lack of empathy there that simply makes it stop mattering if he "believes every word he says" or "is just trolling".

End result is exactly the same.

That's a very good point. It doesn't matter if you're "just joking," you're still contributing to the overall culture of fear.

It's in The Female Man by Joanna Russ, but I don't know if it's hers or she was quoting someone else.
